This amp still stands the test of time. Fabulous clean and dirty tones at the full range of volumes. Dirty tones in particular are very authentically valve-like=... though this is a SS amp. It was designed by Paul Rivera for Yamaha in the early '80's to offer a wide range of reliable and dependably repeatable tones.
It was very much over-designed and consequently cost a lot to build and to buy when originally issued. It sold in modest numbers, mainly to professionals and was discontinued because Yamaha couldn't build this amp and properly be compensated for its quality.
This amp sounds great next to any Mesa Boogies or Blackstar amps. And, it is much more consistent in tone as the volume goes-up or down. That's a feature which is important for gigging in differing sized venues or for playing at low "home" volume.
The tonal control was quite ground breaking for the early '80s, with a fully parametric equaliser, push-pull "Bright" and mid boost ("FAT") options on Treble and Vol pots, as well as the parametric and usual Treble, Mid & Bass.
It also had foot-switchable clean and dirty channels ( Foot switch not included in this listing).
The parametric eq provides a huge range of what were generally impossible tones outside of a studio.
Bright funky glass sharp Strat in-between quack sounds through Brian May or Part-open Wah Wah sounds to the typical Boogie graphic "Vee" profile tones.
Gives great Warm Jazz tones too. Great sounding and very strong 12-inch EV high quality sourced speaker allows remarkable volume levels without add-on cabs.
The on-board spring reverb is excellent compared to the popular Fender, Peavey etc., amps of the time and still sounds great.
