Offered is a wonderful Inlaid Wood Portrait of ●●●Taras Shevchenko (1814 - 1861)●●● who was a highly regarded 19th Century Poet, Writer & Artist. He is also known for his Political Work. The style of the piece is very European. The panel is constructed with several layers of wood. The picture was beautifully carved by a skilled artist. It is possible that his/her name is on the label but since it is very faded and worn it is nearly impossible to decipher. The front surface is varnished and the back side is unfinished.
THE MEASUREMENTS:
Approximately 30 1/4" x 17 1/4". The weight is just about 5 pounds.
THE CONDITION:
The Condition Field does not include Very Good which would have been best. My choices to click were Good or Excellent so I chose Good.
The overall condition of this panel is very good for its age. This is what I see to describe: the surface shows some age crackling [sort of like crazing on pottery]. I think it adds to the age authenticity of the piece. The layers of wood have separated a little on the edges and at the corners and will need to be re-glued and weighted until set [I will leave this task to the new owner]. The panel has a beveled edge so a frame can be lipped over a bit in order to conceal the raw edges without covering very much of the actual picture. There are a few light mars and scratches which can be concealed with a good scratch cover product. Lastly, the hardware and picture wire are somewhat corroded.
