Position Summary:

Under general supervision, performs highly responsible machine work in maintaining zoological park buildings and equipment to enhance visitor experience and care for the animal collection.

Principal Responsibilities:

• Performs general maintenance or specialized work with regard to metal, welding, cement and stonework
• Tasks include masonry repair, fabrication of steel, stainless steel and aluminum animal enclosures, gates and fences along with general repair of machinery
• Assemble scaffolding
• Operate compressor, torch, or other machine shop equipment
• Will be required to respond to snow and storm related emergencies to assist with removal and clean-up operations during normal and off-normal business hours
• Perform related tasks and duties as required

Qualification Requirements:

• High school graduate
• Valid New York State Driver’s License
• (5) years’ experience in either fabrication, machinist, construction or automotive repair
• NYC Welding License / American Welding Society (AWS) 3G and 4G certification preferred
• Must have basic welding ability in stick and MIG

Physical Demands:

• Tasks require manual dexterity and the ability to safely use tools and equipment, including but not limited to ladders
• Hand tools: saws, drills, sanders, wrenches, ratchets, screwdrivers
• Power tools: battery-powered and electric
• Pneumatic (air-powered) tools such as impact guns, torque tools, grinders (including angle grinders)
• Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds on a regular basis with or without assistance
• Ability and willingness to work weekends, holidays, evenings

Working Conditions:

• The position requires indoor work and outdoor work in all weather conditions
• Some tasks require climbing, kneeling, bending, reaching, stretching, and navigating uneven terrain frequently
