SAR 13 June ---Join SUNDANCE, the LGBT outdoors club founded 1980 for an urban adventure to one of New York City's most remarkable cultural house museums for a special guided tour where we'll learn all about Satchmo, the leading trumpeter and one of the most influential artists in Jazz history. In 1943, world-renowned musician Louis Armstrong and his wife Lucille Wilson, moved into their unassuming, brick-clad house in Corona, Queens where they they happily lived for the rest of their lives. Today, the Louis Armstrong House and Museum is a designated National Historic Landmark with a unique and fascinating story to tell.
We'll meet at 10:45 in the Armstrong Center - a new and architecturally-exciting building - that features a multi-media exhibition with rare photos, recordings, and personal artifacts that reveal the artist’s enduring influence and cultural impact as well as a fascinating oral history video of the neighbors who knew Louis and Lucille personally. We plan to go directly across the street to the historic Armstrong home for a specially-arranged narrated tour at 12:30 pm, with focus on the restored mid-century decor and personal items that reveal aspects of Armstong's remarkable life. A picnic lunch in the beautiful landscaped garden will follow. New members are especially welcome on this urban adventure!
