TO STUDENT NURSES, RN, LPN, NP, MD, XRAY/MRl/CT TECHS OR ANYONE BEING HIRED TO PLACE PIVC'S
In this course, I wiII hold you to the high standards of professional vascular care and technique. I do this for two reasons. First, it is essential to the learning process that we get back to basics. Second, it is important that there be a level of knowledge acquired and practical hands on for you to walk away from the class feeling confident that you have now acquired the tools to practice on your own and to be the best vascular person you can be. All students who attend this course will walk away more knowledgeable, more confident to handle a difficult patient and more aware of their job performance.
I understand you want to stick a vein, but there is so much more to learn first. Learning and understanding the why, when, where, who, and what of venous access devices, the care and maintenance, Supplies, IV Fluids, sterile technique, and the confidence to challenge anyone who questions you, will be my goal.
My belief is that the PIVC (peripheral IV catheter) is the most important technique to learn. Whatever vascular access a patient might have (PICC, Midline, tunneled, non-tunneled) if that fails, you \Will be placing a short PIVC to continue their care until a new central line can be established. It is the most necessary line to learn to help continue a patient's care and even to save a life.
