Senior Developmental Editor, Freelance (Remote)

compensation: Hourly by contract
employment type: contract
non-profit organization
telecommuting okay

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) is looking for a freelance developmental editor to help our analysts draft long, fairly technical research reports. We will offer you steady contract work if you meet our requirements.

We would like to find someone who can help writers strengthen the organization and argument of early drafts and work with them through successive versions to achieve a clearly structured, tightly argued final product. You should also be able to help them write clearly, simply, and correctly. To this end you should be skilled yourself in editing for clarity, brevity, and readability as well as for grammar and style. You must have at least a bachelor’s degree (advanced degree preferred) and at least seven years of solid copy editing, substantive editing, and developmental editing experience. A background in teaching or coaching college-level writing would be a big plus.

Please send your resume and a cover email with the subject header “Editor” to editor@aceee.org. Apply by February 7, 2020. We do not accept phone calls, and, due to the large volume of responses, we will not be able to acknowledge receipt of every application.

Be sure to answer these two questions in the body of your email:

1. How would you edit the following sentence to make it direct and concise and to correct any errors?
The administration of the program is shared by a substantial number of agencies, however, the impact of this on the quality of the program is not significant.

2. (a) What is the main issue with the following paragraph?
(b) How would you work with the writer to resolve the issue?
(c) Changing as few words as possible, revise the paragraph to show the end result you would aim for.
Today minimum parking requirements impose an unnecessary cost burden on developers, one that is passed on to tenants in the form of higher rent. These policies were designed to ensure that new construction projects provided adequate parking to service their residential and commercial occupants. Tenants without vehicles effectively subsidize the cost of car ownership for their neighbors. Minimum parking requirements lock developers into including parking facilities in new construction. Inflated parking supply incentivizes city residents to purchase and keep personal cars even if they live in areas with easy access to transit or other mobility services.
