Digital Trends is seeking an experienced freelance writer who can produce news, SEO articles, longform feature pieces, and product reviews for DT's Emerging Technology section. In this position, you'll be tasked with a mix of assigned stories as well as those you pitch to the Section Editor, whom you will report to. If we're satisfied with your work, it could develop into a consistent, long-term working relationship with many opportunities down the road.
About Digital Trends:
Digital Trends is here to help people navigate an increasingly digital world. We are providers of trustworthy and unbiased product reviews written in plain English, as well as timely and entertaining coverage of the way tech is changing our lives. By focusing on products that incorporate style along with cutting edge functionality, Digital Trends has become an indispensable resource for people who embrace the best of what technology can offer. We are the fastest-growing independent tech media brand in the world and among the top 10 most visited technology sites.
This gig is a wild one. If hired, you'll be covering all the big, sexy, and amazing technologies that are reshaping the human experience and changing the world at large. This includes (but is not limited to): space exploration, artificial intelligence, drones/robots, VR/AR, 3D printing, agricultural tech, renewable energy, personal transport devices (aka "rideables"), medical/scientific breakthroughs, blockchain & cryptocurrency, and anything/everything Elon Musk.
On top of that, we'll also expect you to complete SEO articles and in-depth product reviews on a regular basis - specifically in the categories of drones, 3D printers, and rideable tech (electric skateboards, e-bikes, etc).
Don't worry. We don't expect you to know everything right from the get-go, but you'll definitely need to be a quick learner with an aptitude for explaining complex topics in a simple, approachable way. You'll also need to become a pro at sourcing interesting news, and have an allergy to re-hashing stories that have been written elsewhere.
Broad knowledge of the current technological landscape is a must, and knowledge of WordPress or a similar CMS is important. As part of your posts, you will be finding and securing relevant images and other media to draw readers in and keep them there. Your sources will include media from manufacturers, official releases, stock photography, and more.
The ideal candidate already has considerable experience writing and fact checking online tech news, time each week to review products, top-notch research skills, and the drive to dive right into creating publishable content with minimal training. There are no set hours for this position - only the expectation that fresh stories will make it live on Digital Trends during daylight hours during the week. The ability to turn around airtight copy quickly and reliably while using excellent editorial judgment is crucial.
If you aren't self-driven and constantly motivated to start new projects, this probably isn't the right gig for you.
How to Apply:
To apply, please send a cover letter outlining your credentials, a resume (PDF please!), three published clips (links are fine, and include a LinkedIn if possible), and/or a link to your portfolio.
