Hello,
I'm Tim Tolka, an author, editor, and journalist, specializing in true crime and detective stories where unlikely detectives face blowback for doing the right thing. I like collaborating and I meet my partners wherever they are in the creative process. In 2018, I published Blue Mafia, a 300-page biography of a civil rights lawyer who spurred two federal investigations into Ohio police departments, which took eight years to research, write, and edit.
That story motivated me to become a screenwriter. Since then, I've co-written several true crime screenplays and manuscripts, often working from basic outlines or treatments, sometimes just a page or two, from which I construct and structure complex plots and characters. I've edited various novels and written memoirs for a cop, as well as a soldier, a surgeon, an emerald dealer, several drug dealers, and a daredevil. I also conduct private investigations for individuals and organizations.
For the past six years, on top of my steady true crime work, I've been providing coverage and story consulting services for screenwriters, directors, and producers. I'm used to being part of a creative team with both supervisors, partners / co-writers, and assistants (managing and coaching a team of assistant writers). I've written 5 TV scripts (thriller, paranormal/true crime, period / Western, biopic), 6 features (crime dramas, police procedural, paranormal/true crime, biopic), and 7 manuscripts (paranormal/true crime, biography/memoir, thriller/spy fiction). I even wrote two short scripts for true crime-influenced video game companies, including AlquimiSoft and Parallel World, a Chinese game.
After growing up as a devoté to true crime and police procedurals and mysteries, I started writing true crime for two of my clients, first writing stories about mobsters and serial killers for the Youtuber LegalEagle and ghostwriting a memoir about a killing spree in Virginia.
In addition to my screenwriting, I have been writing memoirs and novels, adopting the voice of a soldier, a cop, a drug dealer, a daredevil, a sexual assault survivor, and a surgeon to write those memoirs. All my projects required research, distillation of information, notes from my clients, and editing.
Whatever you have to throw at me, I’m ready for it.
