The Even More Surreal Sequel To The Adventure Game That Started It All
Riven picks up right where Myst left off. Atrus knows the ancient art of creating "linking books", specially written books that serve as portals to other worlds known as "Ages". Atrus needs your help to free his wife, Catherine, who is being held hostage in her home Age of Riven (which is slowly collapsing) by Atrus' manipulative father and the self-declared ruler of Riven, Ghen.
Thirty years earlier, Atrus and Catherine trapped Gehn on Riven by removing all of the linking books that led out of that Age. The final book they escaped with from Riven (which led to the Age of Myst) fell into the Star Fissure (a rift leading out of the damaged Age of Riven into a mysterious, space-like void). This was the linking book which you found and which led you to the events of (the original) Myst. Catherine's sons, Sirrus & Aechnar, later tricked her into returning to Riven where she became Ghen's captive.
The world of Riven is larger than that of Myst and its puzzles are more numerous AND more complex. Riven's narrative is differently structured as well: it takes place on the five islands of the Age of Riven. Solving puzzles grants access to new areas of the islands and enables travel via the Riven tram network or, eventually via the star bridges available through the Domes on each island. Riven's volcanic landscapes, steep cliffs, and crater lakes,
are strewn with mechanical Steam Punk artifacts such as elevators, pipes, levers and roller coaster-like transports. You must consider the purpose and physical principles of each of these artifacts, as well as their importance in Riven's culture.
The Official Strategy Guide (by Prima) includes a map on the Age of Riven islands.
