K. SUGITO "Standard-B" Violin Bow (Advanced), Japan, 4/4
High quality bow by Sugito handcrafted in Japan. Round stick made from beautiful, select Pernambuco wood of bright terracotta color. Ebony frog with full nickel mount and large single eye.
Sutito Bow Company is Japan's number one maker of bows for stringed instruments. Its bows are praised for their flawless craftsmanship, quality materials, and superb playing characteristics. While the company produces a wide range of bow grades -- from student to performing soloist -- even the entry level models are quite expensive, reflecting the Company's reputation and the popularity of its bows.
This Standard-B bow was made in the late 1990s. During that time, the company was led by Koji Sugito (the fourth generation of the company's leadership), hence the "K. Sugito" branding. The bow has very little playing "mileage" on it (there is no visible wear on the thumb leather; the original Sugito label has not been removed) -- it is in excellent, gently used vintage condition.
The Standard-B model targets advanced players and is a big step up from the entry level Standard-1 models and the intermediate Standard-A model. The list price for the Standard-B is currently 110,000 yen (which during recent decades was a rough equivalent of US$1,100).
The bow has medium stiffness, good bounce, and an even draw from tip to frog.
The bow is properly balanced for its weight (61 g and the balancing point of approximately 7 1/8 inches from the frog), yielding good playability.
This vintage bow is play-ready and will be an excellent "budget" bow for the advanced player.
