I'm happy to work with folks at all age levels and all levels of ability. I especially enjoy working with people who feel like they are in some way frustrated with of "can't do" Math, simply for the joying of helping them discover that this just isn't true.
My rate is $40 per hour, with some flexibility based on income (all situations considered). I like to start by having a relaxed phone chat (at no charge) about your needs and what you hope to get out our collaborative sessions, and the first paid session can be cancelled at any time (up until the first hour) at no charge if you feel it isn't clicking.
The first session is ideally done in person (at a public park, atrium, or low-key café) but Zoom, Skype or Google Hangouts also work great of course. I can accept Venmo, PayPal or cash. I live in Manhattan, but can make it out to most parts of Brooklyn and Queens (and a good chunk of the Bronx) as well.
As to my philosophy: I don't believe in magic systems or techniques -- all that's needed is rapport, vibe and a bit of motivation on the student's part. Importantly, I tailor my teaching the individual, and am glad to spend a bit of time up front (and off the clock) to get a sense of where they're coming from, and what they really hope to get out of their math studies moving forward. I really like helping people not just coming to terms with the functional aspects of mathematics, but to see its intrinsic beauty and coolness as well.
As to my background: Masters in applied math, 800 subject and quantitative scores (from the old system; equivalent to 170 today). 800 on the SATs (again on the older system), 5 each on the AP Physics and Math. I normally work as a Data Analyst, but I happen to really enjoy tutoring & helping people on their Math journeys at whatever stage they may be at.
