Learn chess from someone with experience in education!
Hi! My name is Dan Pomerantz, and I'm offering chess lessons to students of all ages/skill level. My peak ELO rating is over 2100 USCF and 2200 Canadian, which qualifies me as a Candidate Master. More important than my rating is that I'm passionate about teaching and quality education, having taught professionally at the university/college level for over 15 years (please look at my ratemyprofessor page for references! https://www.ratemyprofessors.com/professor/1651144) .
Some of the activities we'll do together to improve your game include:
-Going over recent games you've played to find areas of improvement
-Chess puzzles designed to enhance your pattern recognition or calculation
-Study openings and endgames (very important!) for the key ideas instead of simply memorizing moves
-Review illustrative games of famous players, both current and past
I also have a YouTube channel where I've been putting together some sample lessons, although keep in mind the format of a 1-on-1 live class is quite a bit different since it's interactive and geared towards you specifically! Here is a sample of game analysis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25mTjXvtdJo
I charge $40 per hour for a virtual lesson. My rate includes preparation for a personalized lesson before each class, and any student receiving recurring lessons will receive asynchronous support from me (over email or text). I also offer group lessons (usually 2 or 3 students at once) for a discount per student as well as bulk purchase rates.
Whether you have specific goals you want to achieve or simply want more exposure to the activity that is art, science, and sport all in one, please reach out to discuss the next steps!
