We are seeking volunteers for a research study at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) to determine the effect of using a medication called alpelisib to temporarily induce or accentuate resistance to the effect of the blood sugar-lowering hormone insulin on how the liver produces glucose (sugar) and certain fats.
Whom we’re seeking: Adults (ages 18-70) with body mass index (BMI) of 18-25 kg/m2 (lean range) or 30-45 kg/m2 (obesity range) and no history of diabetes, but prediabetes is okay for those in the obesity range.
Duration of participation: Attend a screening visit, then a brief visit for people with BMI in the obesity range only to have an ultrasound of the liver (FibroScan®), then 2 inpatient (overnight) study visits of up to 30 hours, 2-8 weeks apart
What you have to do: After screening procedures, come to 2 study visits, follow a special diet for two days each time, take a dose of alpelisib or placebo (inert non-drug) at each of the two study visits, receive intravenous (into the vein) infusions of glucose (sugar) and fat “tracer” molecules (not radioactive), and have a series of blood samples drawn.
Compensation: $700 for those who complete the study, plus reimbursement for travel expenses within the NYC metro area
