A painting of a scene in Jamaica. It was painted by the Postwar and Contemporary artist, Vernon Tong (born 1933) in 1956. The painting is signed and dated lower right: "Vernon Tong 1956." It is watercolor on paper. The painting depicts multiple figures on the left: A seated couple holding hands, a seated woman, another woman standing; holding a childs hand, a man standing weaing a tall, Jamaican style hat; holding a bag, two figures standing in the water and another figure in deeper water. There is a pier structure with posts in the central area. Two sailboats in the water and palm trees overall. The painting is framed, under glass. Painting: 14 3/8 x 17 1/4 inches Frame: 21 3/8 x 25 1/2 inches.
A correct size matboard is needed. The final photo shows the painting cropped, as it would look in the correct size matboard.

The Jamaican artist Vernon Tong was represented by Hills Galleries Ltd. 101 Harbour Street, Kingston, Jamaica. Hills Galleries Ltd., founded by Christopher Hills,. It was Jamaica’s first major commercial art gallery. The gallery existed from 1951-1977. "Throughout the 1950s and 1960s Hills Galleries supplied and exhibited local celebrity artists Ian Fleming and Noel Coward, enjoyed the patronage of British royals and such high-profile clients as Sadruddin Aga Khan. Winthrop Rockefeller, Elizabeth Taylor, Lady Bird Johnson, Grace Kelly, and Errol Flynn... Through multiple exhibitions, the Hillses nurtured or launched the careers of a plethora of talented Jamaican artists, such as Tabois, Kenneth Abendana Spencer, Carl Abrahams, Gaston Barrinton Watson, Albert Huie, Gloria Escoffery, Karl Parboosingh, Vernon Tong and the revivalist preacher/painter/sculptor Mallica Reynolds." He painted in Jamaica and the UK. Vernon Tong was best known for his Modernist paintings of Jamaican life.
