--Sold; ""COLLECTIONS OCÈANIENNES DU DOCTEUR PHILIPPE FRANÇOIS" ("Oceanic Collections of Dr. Philippe François)", Tajan, Hotel Drouot, Paris, France, December 13, 2002.

Dr. Philippe François was born in Saumur on November 23, 1859. He passed his baccalaureate in Poitier in 1879. After having started studying medicine, he became a Doctor of Natural Sciences, Head of practical work at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes, Director - Deputy of the "Laboratory of evolution of organized beings" at the Sorbonne and of the "Station zoologique de Wimereux" He mounted in Paris on Friday March 13, 1908.

In 1888, he left on a mission for Oceania, where he was responsible for studying, among other things, the biology of coral reefs. Returned to France in 1891, he left for the same islands in 1893, until 1895. According to the travel report of Dr. Philippe Francois during his first trip, his correspondence with his family during his second trip and certain information on the geographical and nautical maps that he used, it is certain that the islands and archipelagos were the following ones.

New Caledonia: Belep Island, Grande Terre (several stays in Noumea) Loyalty Islands (Uvea, Lifu, Mare) Ile des Pins. He also went to New Hebrides and the Solomon Is.

Dr. François Philippe donated many pieces to the collection of the Musée d'Ethnographie du Trocadéro (1878-1935), Paris, France, but always kept the best pieces for his collection. This Museum became the Musee de l'Homme in 1937, now the Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac (2006-Present).
