An Asmat paint bowl (jifai), with a large ancestor figure. The elongated, bowls, from the Pacific Northwest are reminiscent of canoes with carved prows. The figure's hands in the trance position. The nose is pierced with the mouth slightly open and the tongue protruding outward. The figure is wearing a crocodilian headdress and seated on a crocodilian snout with head attached. The other end of the bowl having a human head with avian style headgear. With relief carved "waves" denoting a waterline, on the bowl. Remains of white pigment. The pigment obtained from crushed limestone or shells. Varied, gloss patina.
