Helmut Friedrich Schäffenacker (Germany, 1921–2010)
Brutalist Wall Relief, 1970s
Polychrome glazed stoneware
Impressed mark on verso: "Shäffenacker, Ulm/do, Made in Germany, handgeformt"
Mark incised by hand on verso: "598/1"
41 x 41 cm (16.1 x 16.1 in.)
Weight: 8.6 kg (20.3 lbs)
Provenance: Purchased from Starkeld of Scandinavia, Eket, Sweden
Condition: Very good, with the exception of one surface protuberance at the lower right that is temporarily attached with kneaded eraser (putty rubber) instead of conservation (the element came loose when it was shipped to me). However, since this is a modest work or art with intentional production irregularities, an improvised solution, like the current one, made economical and practical sense to me, including to stave off further vulnerability if it were permanently fixed in place. Conservation would cost more than the work itself and might not be a significant structural and visual improvement. In the final photograph in this listing, please see the medium gray putty where the base of pipe-like form meets the face of the relief.
