This documentary course blends theory and practice to explore both classical and evolving forms of documentary. Students will investigate how contemporary culture-through iPhones, social media, surveillance footage, podcasts, and even graphic novels-reshapes the very notion of documentary, which increasingly takes nonlinear, experimental forms presented in galleries and museums, such as Lessons of the Hour by Isaac Julien, or generative forms in cinema such as Eno, or blended reenactment, such The Voice of Hind Rajab. The course combines historical context, analysis of new media formats, and hands-on creative practice, enabling students to produce distinctive works of their choosing: audio pieces, fine arts, video projects, or traditional documentary profiles. Student projects will be critiqued and developed from inception to completion. Practical skills in Adobe Premiere Pro will be covered, including interview techniques, voiceovers, and sound design. The course concludes with a curated compilation of student work for online presentation.
Note: All students with an active registration in this course will be given free access to the Adobe Creative Cloud. Students must bring a laptop to each session. This course is fully online and offered through synchronous sessions during the listed course hours.
