The great storm crippled New York and New England for days, completely shutting down North America’s most important population centers. The boreal blast tied the region’s transportation system in knots, cut off communication between cities and towns, and forced American cities and citizens to take a hard look at how to cope with a crisis. A century later the Blizzard of ’88 is still the benchmark by which severe winter storms are measured.
