This title with its first and only printing of 850 trade copies has been sold out and unavailable for over a decade.
The subject of this book is Ward 81 - a women’s only ward at the hospital formerly known as the Oregon State Asylum. Diodato was the last photographer allowed to enter the infamous ward in 2008 prior to the destruction. This beautifully printed monograph was completed in 2010.
This is the location of the Academy Award winning film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. A 1975 American psychological film directed by Miloš Forman, based on the 1962 novel by Ken Kesey. The film stars Jack Nicholson as Randle McMurphy, a new patient at a mental institution, and features a supporting cast of Louise Fletcher, Will Sampson, Danny DeVito, Sydney Lassick, William Redfield, as well as Christopher Lloyd and Brad Dourif in their film debut.
