A hard-to-find, unusual book from another era completely.
The PHILOSOPHY OF INGERSOLL: To Plow is to Pray, To Plant is to Prophesy, and the Harvest Answers and Fulfils. Edited and Arranged by Vere Goldthwaite. Published by Paul Elder and Company, 1913. Second Edition. Hardcover, tan cloth over boards. 117 pages, Deckel edges. Very Good condition. Gilt on front cover darkened but fully legible. Title on spine illegible. Cloth cover has markings from previous book cover, no residue remaining. Interior clean.
Published during the height of the Arts and Crafts Movement, with appropriate typefaces, layouts and borders, etc.
Written in 1906 as an homage to Col. Robert G. Ingersoll, originally of Yates County, New York (1833), and died at "Walston", Dobbs Ferry-on-Hudson, 1899. Active in both the military and in politics, this volume gives a glimpse into one man's thoughts of that period.
Here is a single quote:
"Justice is the only worship.
Love is the only priest.
Ignorance is the only slavery.
Happiness is the only good.
The time to be happy is now.
The place to be happy is here.
The way to be happy is to make other people so."
Not bad words -- for any era!
