This men's engraved toiletry kit is a rare item from the world of men's grooming, made in Europe in the late 1800s or very early 1900s.
The travel kit belonged to Emil Ludwig Fredrich Knust and is engraved "Emil L. Knust." Knust was born in Hanover, Germany, on Sept 11, 1879, so we assume this case was used in the late 1800s and very early 1900s.
The leather is faded and shows significant wear but remains a striking example of men's personal hygiene from 100+ years ago. The kit measures about 13" across by 9" high. The exterior is high-quality leather with two metal clasps. The fold-out nature of the kit reveals storage compartments for nine separate toiletry items. The surviving contents include:
* Four gorgeous mother-of-pearl brushes, in different sizes and each with a different type of brush hair. The exterior of each brush gleams in ornamental turquoise, pink, red, white and olive colors.
* One beautiful snap-lock Gillette carrying case for a men's personal razor, lined in purple velvet, with two miniature stainless steel cases for individual shaving blades.
* One lint brush with the embossed words "Extra-Fine France"
* A black plastic case for keeping bar-soap
