Gorham STRASBOURG ranks high among the most sought-after sterling silver flatware patterns. It was introduced in 1897, and its baroque design is characterized by symmetrical scrollwork along the edges of each piece. This set is an exquisite example. It is a service for eight, with NINE pieces per setting, plus an additional eight serving pieces - 80 pieces in all! (One serving spoon is not shown in the picture with all the pieces laid out.) The pieces are NOT monogrammed. This set also features an elegant felt-lined two-level case.
80 PIECES
Lots of silver sets are basic four-piece sets consisting of a dinner fork, a salad fork, a dinner knife, and a teaspoon... This set is expansive - eight complete place setting (72 pieces), each consisting of nine pieces - dinner fork, salad fork, hors d'oeuvres fork, tablespoon, soup spoon, teaspoon, iced-tea spoon, dinner knife, and butter knife.
The set also includes eight serving pieces: solid serving spoon, slotted serving spoon, serving fork, sauce ladle, sugar spoon, jelly spoon, and master butter knife.
CONDITION
Most of this set was purchased in the early 1970s, and many pieces seem to be unused… however, the pieces were moved around in a cardboard box for some years, and there are some marks on some of the pieces. The sugar spoon, in particular, has some scratching across its bowl. The soup spoons were sourced from an older set; they have hallmarks that indicate they were produced in the late 1800s, and are more worn than the rest of the pieces. The case is beautiful, but one of the loops that holds the knives to the case is torn.
BRAND
The name Gorham is synonymous with high-end silver, being one of America’s the most sought after producers since being established in the 1830s (until it was taken over and renamed in 2005).
WEIGHT
The approximate weight of the all-sterling pieces is 82.58 troy ounces. I estimate that the the 17 knife handles weigh 11 troy ounces, leading me to estimate the amount of sterling in the set to be 93.58 troy ounces, and the corresponding amount of pure silver to be 86.56 troy ounces.
