Toussaint St Pierre, well known Haitian painter, 1923 - 1985. "St Pierre spent most of his life working as a gardener. He was about fifty years old when he began to paint in 1972. Encouraged by his patron, Albert Mangones, St Pierre devoted most of his time to his new passion. A talented painter, he expressed his feelings through his work, painting mostly birds, flowers and voodoo spirits." St Pierre had a uniquely reconizable style, as you can see from this painting. It appears to have been painted on masonite. The painting is round, with a small wood brace on its reverse side from which to hang it, I suppose.
I bought this painting many years ago from a friend whose passion was collecting Haitian art. It's the real deal. Authentic signature. There are a few small scratches on the painting. I suspect this is typical of paintings on masonite. You can find more examples of his floral paintings by searching Toussaint St Pierre Haitian Painter. Craigslist prevents me from posting a link, so you'll have to research him yourself. But when you do you will find all his floral paintings share a similar style, but it's the round masonite canvas that makes this one unique. 21" Diameter. Will look great hanging from your wall.
Mom collected antiques her entire life. She loved going to flea markets and thrift stores in search of hidden treasures. Mom actually used to have an antique store on Gramercy Park. Now that she has passed I am selling off those pieces from the store that she brought home after high rents forced her out of business.
