The Pitcairn Islands is a possession of Britain located in a remote part of the south Pacific Ocean. It was the place that Fletcher Christian and his follow HMS Bounty mutineers took refuge. The territory consists of 4 small islands, 3 of which are uninhabited and the fourth, Pitcairn Island has a population today of only 35 - 50 people, most of them descendants of the mutineers. But it has its own national flag, certainly a rarity.
The flag features a union jack in the upper left corner on a blue field and a coat of arms consisting of a blue, yellow, and green shield, representing the island and the Pacific Ocean. It also includes a Bible and anchor, symbols of the HMS Bounty and the mutiny that led to the settlement of the islands. The shield is surrounded by a wreath and crested with a helmet bearing a wheelbarrow and a slip of milo, representing agriculture and local crafting. The material is polyester.
The flag has never been flown outdoors or displayed.
