Alexander Sampson Kirkman (1844-1912)
Alexander S. Kirkman took a company started by his father and turned it into one of the major soap manufacturers of its time.
In 1837, his father John Kirkman founded Kirkman & Son in New York City; the company moved to Brooklyn in 1880 when Alexander opened a Brooklyn factory. Alexander was then responsible for the firm’s growth through the manufacturing of borax soap, octagon soap (bars shaped like an octagon so that they could be easily held), soap powder, softener, floating soap, and cleanser.
In 1894, Alexander began purchasing property at the eastern end of Brooklyn what is now called "DUMBO". At the time, the site at the corner of Bridge and Water Streets housed a cooperage; it soon became the site of the first structure erected by Kirkman & Son. In April 1895, in celebration of the completion of the factory, Kirkman & Son held a banquet on the second floor of the building for 84 employees. Alexander S. Kirkman also lived in Brooklyn
Like many firms of the time, Kirkman gave away coupons with each purchase that the buyer could trade in for premiums. A 1910 advertisement stated, “Beware of persons offering to buy our coupons or to exchange them for trading stamps. If you dispose of our coupons to brokers or dealers, you do not get full value. It is to your advantage to exchange them for our premiums only.” This ad, published in November, also noted that Christmas toys were ready for distribution in its premium offices.
In 1913, Kirkman & Son employed 375 men in Brooklyn. In 1930, the company was sold to Colgate-Palmolive-Peet; Brooklyn production ceased during the 1940s and the property was sold in 1945. Today it is the home of luxury condominiums bearing the name Kirkman Lofts – a lasting reminder of a monumental soap man.
