"AWG stands for American Wire Gauge, which refers to the thickness (diameter) of the wire.
"14" means fourteen individual wires will be one inch wide.
14 AWG wires are THICKER than 16 AWG and 18 AWG wires.
It takes sixteen 16 AWG wires to be one inch wide.
It takes eighteen 18 AWG wires to be one inch wide.
Those are the three most common wire thicknesses.
14 AWG wire carries more electrical current than the other two, so it is used for power tools.
