Build it. Tune it. Fire it. A hands-on STEM construction set that turns engineering theory into action.
Bring ancient engineering to life with a modern twist. The VEX® Crossbow by HEXBUG is a snap-together construction kit that lets builders assemble a working crossbow launcher, learn the mechanics behind tension, levers and trajectory, then tune and fire foam darts for real-world testing. The set includes hundreds of compatible VEX pieces so the finished crossbow is sturdy, adjustable, and integrates with other VEX systems for further experimentation. It’s an ideal classroom or at-home STEM activity for makers, students, and hobbyists who love to build and experiment.
Key features
• Functional launcher that fires foam darts long distances — launches over 40–42 feet when built and adjusted correctly.
• Includes multiple foam darts (model/version dependent; Crossbow 2.0 commonly packaged with 3 darts).
• 150–200+ snap-together VEX-style pieces for a hands-on build (depending on the version / SKU).
• Two alternate builds: construct different configurations to experiment with range, stability and aim.
• Fully mechanical — no batteries required; learning focus on gears, levers, tension and simple machines.
• Compatible with educational VEX IQ pieces so you can expand or modify your design.
What you’ll learn / why it’s great for STEM
• This kit makes abstract engineering concepts tangible. During assembly and tuning, users practice:
• Mechanical reasoning (how lever length and tension affect force and distance)
• Problem solving and iterative design (test, measure, tweak, repeat)
• Fine motor skills and following mechanical assembly instructions
• Its build-and-test cycle is perfect for classroom demonstrations, robotics clubs, or solo tinkering.
How it works (brief)
Assemble the frame from the snap-together VEX pieces. Two adjustment dials let you control (1) how far back the arms are pulled before release (distance/tension) and (2) the vertical aim (height). Load a foam dart into the guide, pull the lever (or cock the launcher as instructed), and press the firing lever to release the lock and send the dart flying. Alternate builds change arm length, base stability and launch geometry so you can compare results.
Safety & usage notes
• Not a weapon — intended strictly for play and educational use. Do not modify to fire projectiles other than the supplied foam darts.
• Avoid aiming at people or animals — never aim at eyes or face. Follow all printed safety warnings.
• Small parts — choking hazard; not suitable for children under 3 years. Check the box for the manufacturer’s recommended minimum age (typically 14+ for this kit).
