The El Puente Cornerstone Leadership Centers are after-school youth community development leadership centers which focus on arts for social change, academic enrichment, and holistic leadership development for youth ages 6-21. It is part of a community organization that also conducts advocacy, organizing and health & wellness activities for the community. This program focuses on the integration of human rights consciousness and artistic development that allows its members to experience their creative potential while learning about social responsibility.
The El Puente Cornerstone Leadership Centers are not drop-in centers, they are membership programs. El Puente's membership Model requires youth to commit to active participation within a structure designed to meet their varied developmental needs. Membership is the foundation of its mentoring & youth development programs, a process rooted in the organization's mission to nurture and inspire leadership for peace & justice.
THE POSITION. As a staff member of El Puente, the Visual Arts Facilitator is expected to uphold and work within the mission, philosophy, and principles of the organization. She/he must become fully knowledgeable of the purpose, structure, and process of El Puente Membership. She/he must also work in tandem with other staff members to ensure the integrity of the Membership Process, the achievement of organizational membership goals, and to realize expected contractual outcomes.
Teach foundations/techniques of fine arts inclusive of drawing, painting, and sculpture.
Implement curricula and activities.
Design curriculum that integrates arts/crafts techniques and theme-based projects with seasonal or event-related themes.
Coordinate exhibition pieces for the end of the summer showcase, and/or seasonal, theme-based events.
Attend regular staff and supervision meetings and participate in staff development.
Keep accurate records of youth attendance.
Work with staff to mentor and support youth, as well as to create a safe, supervised, and welcoming environment.
Collaborate with other artists and facilitators within and across El Puente programs on community projects or participate in larger El Puente events.
Communicate effectively with kids, families, and colleagues.
Ability to effectively support and implement a planned curriculum.
Have ready the necessary materials for the class in advance.
Delegate responsibilities to classroom assistants.
Ensure a safe environment for all members.
Create reports for administrators as needed (materials needed, Behavior reports, etc)
Be aware and observant in the classroom.
* 1-2 years of experience teaching the foundations of visual arts/fine arts to young people ages 6-14 in an after-school, camp or another youth setting.
* Previous experience in designing curriculum; willing to work to creatively incorporate El Puente's mission in their curriculum.
* B.A., B.F.A, or Master's Degree or Equivalent Experience
* Bilingual Spanish Preferred
14 hours weekly beginning immediately and ending June 30, 2020.
Possibility for continuation during the school year.
Monday and Wednesday: 3:30 pm - 7 pm.
Tuesday and Thursday: 3 pm - 6:30 pm.
