My name is John Keenan and I am a full-time high school teacher in Brooklyn Heights with over 10 years of teaching experience. While I currently teach history and humanities, and am therefore qualified for instruction in reading and writing, I was previously a math teacher for 5 years. Before that, I was employed by Practice Perfect Tutoring. In total I have tutored 50+ students in all sections of the SAT exam, and have experience working with both mainstream students and those with learning disabilities. I hold an MA from Teachers College, Columbia University.

My instruction method is simple: students complete one practice SAT exam each week, keeping track of questions they stumbled on. During our 50min weekly sessions, we will review these questions as a way to target a student's specific areas of growth. For a rigidly structured exam like the SAT, I have found this repetition to be the most straightforward way to improve scores and reduce test anxiety. This method also allows students to track the progress of their score improvements. The number of sessions a family chooses varies widely, but typically falls between 6-10 sessions.
Tutoring takes place in my classroom at Mary McDowell Friends School in Brooklyn Heights, starting at 3:30 or 4:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays. For an extra $30/session charge I also provide in-home tutoring in the following Brooklyn neighborhoods: Brooklyn Heights, Downtown Brooklyn, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Gowanus, Boerum Hill, Fort Greene, Park Slope, and Prospect Heights.
I am committed to making test prep tutoring accessible to families with a range of income levels. Therefore, I offer a sliding-scale payment plan, ranging from $50-$150 per session based on an honor system (I do not require any proof of finances). Please be aware that I only reserve a limited number of spots at the $50 rate. All payment is made in cash.
Household income below $80K/year: $50/session
Household income $80K-200K: $100/session
Household income above $200K: $150/session
I also offer small group tutoring for groups of 2-6 students. While less targeted to your specific student's needs, this can be a cost-effective way to get exposure to test prep while giving students the camaraderie of friends or neighbors. These sessions are 75 minutes and are all charged at $180 per session, split among families. It is up to you to find other students and determine a common time that works for everyone.
Feel free to reach out via email or Craigslist chat with any questions! If you are interested in hiring, please let me know your appropriate rate and a list of weekly time(s) your student is available. In general, I require students to commit to the same weekly time, with a 24hr cancelation policy to avoid being charged.
