FALL REGISTRATION NOW! Work from live models in Park Slope! This year, our program continues with a mix of study in different mediums including oil, pastel, watercolor, charcoal, and pencil. We draw and paint models (figure and portrait), still life, basic drawing, and landscape.

Live classes meet Sunday 3-6, Monday 2-5, Monday 7-10, and Tuesday 7-10. Classes are limited to 11 students, some working from live models., and others working from basic drawing and painting. Zoom classes meet Tuesday from 3-5:30. PRIVATE CLASSES ARE ALSO AVAILABLE.
Students at all levels are welcome: Beginners receive clear, patient instruction and acquire real skills in a friendly setting. Learning fundamentals takes away the frustration that many people have when they are trying to paint and draw. More advanced students benefit from the individual attention and practical guidance they get in developing themselves as artists and building a career—several people who have studied here have gone on to attain full-time careers in the arts.

In addition to the regular classes, we normally take class trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art several times per year to look at the work of the Great Masters of the past and learn the secrets of their techniques in a way that can greatly help you with your own work.

If you or someone you know is interested in taking art lessons (painting/drawing—charcoal, graphite, watercolor, pastel), let me know and we’ll set a time for you to come visit the studio in person or chat on Zoom to see the school, show me your work, and discuss your artistic goals.

I look forward to working with you.

What students are saying about the classes…

“I’ve known him as a friend and fellow artist for most of my life. I’ve always held him in the highest esteem for the quality of his painting and drawing, as well as his devotion to a life as an artist. He is equally devoted to his calling as a teacher. As a fellow teacher of the visual arts, I’ve been constantly amazed at the results and quick progress that his students make thanks to his conscientious approach to teaching.” -art teacher and professional artist

“The figure painting classes… are exceptional. He has a broad understanding of a variety of painting methodologies and knowledge of art history. He imparts these techniques and insights thoughtfully. He meets students where they are, while motivating them to aspire in their own development and learning. His investment in quality and aesthetic appreciation is inspiring. Years later, the content of his teaching still informs my painting practice.” - art teacher and professional artist

“I have studied ….for over 15 years and have nothing but great things to say about him. He is not only an accomplished artist but also an experienced drawing/ painting, and art history teacher. His methods are traditional if you need the fundamentals, especially if you are a beginner or intermediate, and modern if you are ready to go to the next level as an advanced artist. He translates every component into a clear sequence by using a patient step by step method taking as much time with you as you need to in order to understand it. He is the Mr. Miyagi of Art who knows just about everything that there is to know about it and can teach any level without hesitation from a student who has never picked up a brush or a drawing pencil to someone who wants to make art his or her career”

“I have studied drawing and painting with him for several years, first in his studio and now remotely. He is part of an impressive lineage of committed teachers who offer a wealth of experience, knowledge and techniques. Whether teaching a beginning or advanced class, he generously imparts essential information each step of the way, allowing for each student’s unique skill level, needs and growth. His lessons offer a fundamental and broad understanding of varied techniques and media, as well as a most impressive and illuminating integration of art history. I am now a semi-professional artist and credit AR with nurturing my understanding, skills and “art spirit” tremendously.” - art teacher and professional artist

“Best art teacher I’ve ever had, bar none. In my college years, I took classes at both a large accredited art school and at one of the famous NY art academies, but I didn’t actually learn to paint the way I wanted to until I found him. He offers a rare combination of deep knowledge, an ability to explain clearly, and an appreciation of many different areas of art. To anyone who is interested in learning how to paint or draw realistically (and it is a learnable skill), I cannot recommend him highly enough.” - artist

“I first met him n Harvey Dinnerstein’s class at the National Academy of Art in 1977.I was a wide-eyed young pup just out of High School. He took me under his wing and patiently mentored me. It was like I had two teachers that year. Why did he bother to take the time? Maybe he saw something in me or maybe it was his natural instinct to impart his knowledge and counsel a young artist.

He is a fantastic artist/teacher. He is supremely knowledgeable and passionate about art, in its making, history and purpose. One aspect that distinguishes him from many other representational art teachers is his awareness and understanding of a wide scope of art styles throughout history and contemporary artists and art movements…A teacher that informs so comprehensively and inspires and motivates so enthusiastically.” - art teacher and professional artist

“He is one of the few great humanistic teachers we have left. He teaches disciplines, and the nitty-gritty of looking and recording observations, but it is all within the larger context of painting as a liberal art. He is able to relate what you are doing, not only to the history of art, but to music, literature and philosophy. In this, he is unparalleled. And a caring and dedicated man, above all. “ art teacher and professional artist

“I studied with him for several years as a young artist in Brooklyn as I was just starting my career. His class gave me exactly what I needed-clear, organized instruction, a frank assessment of my abilities, high expectations for what I could achieve, and an honest interest in me as a person and artist. His encyclopedic knowledge of art history is just as valuable if not more so as his technical mastery of drawing and painting. With his guidance, I was able to put together my first solo show in Brooklyn and go on to have my own teaching career…Taking his class, without a doubt, changed my life.” = art teacher and professional artist

“I feel so fortunate to be studying with him. He offers a wealth of knowledge and in-depth instruction on drawing, pastel and painting. The classes support and expertly guide beginning through professional artists. Each class is accompanied by invaluable lectures about the aesthetics of art, art history (classical and modern), as well as structural and anatomical aspects of the human body. AR integrates various art forms to enhance and broaden one’s artistic education. He is a disciplined teacher whose warmth and humor make learning both challenging and inspiring.” - artist
