Vision Therapy Assistant / Administrative Assistant (Park Slope / Gowanus)
~20 to 25 hours a week
We are a niche optometry practice specializing in vision therapy. Vision therapy is a little-known but meaningful treatment that helps patients overcome visual problems that may be impacting their ability to perform well in school, work, or life.
We are seeking a new team member to assist the doctor with vision therapy, who will eventually be trained to work 1:1 primarily with children 4-12, as well as some teens and adults. Candidates must have prior medical or rehabilitative (OT, PT, etc) experience or have experience working with young children in early education/child development. The job involves coaching patients through exercises and games that will strengthen their visual skills, and appropriately documenting the visit into EHR. As we are a small business, the role will also include helping with day-to-day operations (such as maintaining a tidy office, managing inventory, running errands) and administrative tasks (assisting with scheduling, etc) as needed.
On the job training is provided, and educational materials will be provided, but some self-study at home may be necessary during training. A strong solid foundation in math, science, and/or background in child development will be helpful. Being a vision therapy assistant is a unique and rewarding career path with room for growth, including a formalized certification process to become a vision therapist in 1-3 years.
The ideal candidate must be able to learn and apply medical/technical information quickly, learn in real-time while providing patient care, and work efficiently and dynamically to help the doctor stay on schedule. They should also have strong people skills and be able function as part of a team and independently, in a fast-paced, but fun small business environment.
As this role requires several months of training, and has a set schedule, students whose schedule will change semester to semester, or who will no longer be available after 1-2 years will not be considered. We are looking for a long-term addition to our team who available to start early-mid August, and is consistently available Monday-Thursday ~ 1-7:30pm.
