Atkin & Co 40’ Pilot Schooner - Gorgeous & Unique!
This is your chance to own one of only 2 Atkin & Co designed “Island Princess” in North
America, and the only one on the Eastern seaboard. Designed in Huntington, Long Island,
‘Deliverance’ lines are clearly based on those of classic Gloucester schooner designs in a small
and manageable package perfect for 6 pack charters or personal cruising. Designed in the
mid-40’s but built in 1986, she classifies as a “new-old boat,” you don’t see an opportunity like
that often in the classic yacht world.
Her most recent accredited survey is less than one year old and available for review, giving
peace of mind as to her condition - she has been well used and well loved.
We purchased her in 2019 and have employed her in our charter business in NYC since, and
she’s proven to be an easy to handle, stable, reliable and gorgeous vessel that checks all the
boxes for that classic sailing experience. Her steel hull was blasted and tie-coated with ppg-135
in 2022 below the waterline, and otherwise she has been cared for judiciously since our
purchase. Her Yanmar 3Jh is one of the most reliable power plants ever built, re-powered in
2005. New engine mounts were installed in 2024, as well as extensive work in re-coating any
needy areas in her bilges, which are all in all in excellent condition with mostly original coating in
great condition.
Her rig is hybridised - with a Marconi main, club-foot staysail and jib with a gaff rigged foresail.
Her main mast is aluminum, replacing the original wooden stick in 2011 under the previous
owner. Her foremast is original, of hollow “birds-ey” joinery and in good, serviceable condition.
Full set of mast hoops for the foresail also in good serviceable condition. Her Mainsheet and
Jibsheets are run aft to the helm, and her foresail and staysail are self-tending. Her running
rigging is primarily “traditional,” with no winches, but jam-cleats for the the Jib and staysail.
Halyards are run to ample belaying pins at both mast bases and within the foresail shrouds.
While similarly sized sloops are heavily reefed in 25+ knots and struggling, you can run jib and
jigger and still keep dry with that glass of wine on deck. The sail—plan options available with a
schooner are unmatched for stability high wind situations, and all of her sails are easy to
manage making even single-handing her a breeze. Wooden spars add to her beauty, but are
small enough to keep their maintenance very manageable. A full keel with a Lunenberg
worm-drive steering mechanism add to the robustness of this little gem, and her “craftsman”
aesthetic make her upkeep seem a pittance when compared to her looks. In 2021 her entire
woooden cap-rail was replaced with a custom one made of composite - another great look with
extreme durability and zero maintenance. Also in 2021 she was fit with a gorgeous new
bowsprit and setting-bit. She is fit with a Lunengerg manual windlass system - again, an
age-tested design that is as robust as it is beautiful. She really has the best of all worlds.
She is documented for Coastwise Trade with zero restrictions.
