I’m selling this Coast Cycles fixed gear winter trainer, handmade by Johnny Coast in Bushwick.
It was built up by Johnny with a mix of vintage track and boutique components. I converted it to flat bar for more comfortable riding around the city. All components are low-mileage. Selling to make room for a mountain bike.
Sizing:
-I’m 5’11” and have it set up with bars slightly above the saddle, bars with slight sweep, and a setback seatpost. Definitely some flexibility with the quill stem and different bar and seatpost options.
-54.5cm top tube
-55cm seat tube (center of crank to top of seattube)
A few highlights:
-bi-laminate construction (see pics of headtube and seattube
-chrome fork and hand-lined blue paint on lugs
-minimalist Coast Cycles branding on headtube and seattube
-custom machined front and rear brake cable stops
-custom rack integrated with brake mounts and fenders
-dynamo wire routing on the fork legs
Build kit includes:
-vintage campagnolo track wheels and crankset, with a super burly campy chainring
-threaded Chris King headset (nearly brand new)
-Nitto seatpost, rare Nitto for Rivendell fillet-brazed stem with 31.8 clamp ($200+ on its own), and SimWorks Rambler bars
-modern Chris king 1” threaded headset
-ergon saddle with titanium rails
-Paul components front brake
-super light, super sturdy honjo fenders with leather washers for rattle-free riding
This bike was designed after a 1950s Alex Singer winter training bike. It sports a road geometry, fixed drivetrain, and fenders, perfect for year-round riding in NYC. I’d say the ride is very responsive without being as twitchy as that of a track bike, and the lightweight tube set gives it nice compliance. I switched to a flat bar, which makes the handling feel a bit quicker and helps with quick braking and leverage when climbing. The tubeset feels really compliant over bumps but still stiff sprinting out of the saddle. I’d say overall it rides like a more comfortable, stable Surly steamroller.
Right now it’s set up as a fast commuter and around-town cruiser. With drop-bars, it’s great for park laps or long rides on 9W. I’ve even considered putting a saddle bag on the rear for credit card touring.
