Website Developer - UNICEF Innovation Website

PROJECT DESCRIPTION - Website Developer - UNICEF Innovation Website
UNICEF's innovation group is looking to build a small public website powered by an open source CMS.

Who We Are:
We are a small cross-division team in UNICEF that develops strategies and partnerships and investigates technologies that can improve UNICEF’s ability to do its work. Our job is to create systems and frameworks that allow for innovation produced at country levels to percolate upwards and sideways – we work to create spaces that encourage innovators. In 2010 there will be a merging of an existing innovation group focused on supply and one focused on communications.

Our Organization: UNICEF is on the ground in over 150 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.

Project Details:
We are looking to create a space for an outside audience of professionals (Private Sector, Academia, NGO’s and other UN Agencies) to be able to both learn and participate in innovative work that UNICEF is doing. Multiple divisions in UNICEF have started innovation teams or projects within the organization focused on a variety of products, partnerships, and strategies intended to help UNICEF in its core mission. This site should align these various efforts and provide a single place for work to be featured, and ideas or partnerships be solicited. The focus would be on encouraging participation around the “thinking” aspects of UNICEF’s work, as well as documentation of programmatic successes and failures.
The content approach and ideas will be combined with some additional sections from our intranet (which can be shown during face to face meetings) and expanded to address our wider mandate. Some of that information can be found here:

http://www.unicef.org/supply/index_50322.html

We want to align various organization wide efforts, making sure to give attention to small one off efforts as well as larger innovation projects. We want to be able to explain the work that is being done clearly and show the impacts that it has had on children’s lives. We want to be able to pose challenges UNICEF is facing to a wide public audience. We want to provide a way for individuals as well as organizations to share ideas for ways to improve UNICEF’s work (suggestions, discussion, design contests, academic courses, fellowship programs, contributions to our open source projects). UNICEF is looking to convene ideas and implementers around its core mission of improving mother and childhood development globally.

Overview of Audience:
The primary user base of the site would be professionals from the private sector, academia, or other NGO’s who are interested in what we do. Ideally they would have heard about the work (we present often and our work is frequently written about) we are doing and would be looking to learn more, suggest potential innovative solutions, or be looking for ways to partner.
Secondary users include:
1) An internal UNICEF audience (the primary site for this audience is our intranet)
2) Media and Journalists
3) A non-professional lay audience looking to learn generally about UNICEF’s work
4) Students who are interested in challenges.

Technological Components:

1) The website will be small but with some interactive parts.
2) The front end code must be semantic with a clean XHTML for the structure and CSS for the presentation.
3) The site needs to be powered by an easy to use open source CMS. (though not Drupal)
4) There will be a design/branding component.

Time Lines:

Proposals are due on Monday November 16th at 3pm EST.

If you are interested in reading more about this project please see the link below for the official Request for Proposal (RFQ). All information on how to bid for this project can be found at the following link:

Good luck!
The wolves are brought from around the country and kept there until they pass away. The animals are not exhibited, but has a dedicated donor base. Most of the donors want to see images of the animals they are supporting, so a website with a strong gallery and good layout is highly in need (plus many donors are older or do not have very up to date computers and cannot navigate or handle websites with a lot of flash). The need for the site is pretty simple, but it has been near impossible to find someone who can avoid the cliches of wolves and native american emblems. The hope instead is to showcase the animals and bring in more revenue. If there is even the slight possibility someone would donate part of their costs, this would be again an act of kindness, as all costs for website development come out of feeding and caring for the animals. Please email with any questions, I am able to go into more detail about the site needs and give info about the refuge. The owner has assigned me to oversee the site, as he is not very computer literate. I can honestly say this is an amazing cause, as a volunteer with the organization. The refuge has been covered on NPR, in many different venues, as it is an amazing refuge with complete dedication to the wolves.

The Digital Performance Institute is developing new ideas to enable, empower, and celebrate the performing arts. We're working on a Performing Arts Database (modeled after the Internet Movie Database) to gather profiles of productions and performances in American theater and dance and put them online in an accessible way, for professionals as well as researchers and audiences. It's a very cool project; the first data we'll be uploading is from BAM performances.

Right now, we could really use a good CSS person to help us make the data entry forms more clean, usable and professional. We're building it on top of Drupal, so some experience with that would be useful.

It's a couple of days work; not at all a great paying gig, but interesting. You need to be onsite at our loft in Chelsea, so we can work on it together. Please let us know if you're interested ... some kind of online resume and samples of your work would be very useful, and PLEASE include an hourly rate that you're comfortable with.

Thanks very much, and look forward to hearing from you!

Company Profile:
Shoplet.com was founded in 1994 by Tony Ellison, a former investment banker at Goldman Sachs. The company was the first to offer consumers and businesses alike the ability to purchase office products online and now features the largest selection anywhere on the internet. Since the company’s inception it has emerged as the disruptive force in the Office Products industry. Long dominated by brick-and-mortar titans such as Office Depot, OfficeMax and Staples, Shoplet.com has become a true threat to these players as we continue to garner an increasing share of the U.S. office supplies market valued at $250 billion. The online portion of the office supplies industry is exploding from just 5% in 2005 to a projected 60% online by 2011. While the old-line retail competitors have a total product selection of 7,000-14,000 products, Shoplet.com is able to offer its customers a comprehensive selection of over 200,000 products including over 8,000 recycled office items. We strive to constantly innovate through implementation of emerging technologies and early adoption of all new media, including offering a Facebook application that allows our customers to calculate the natural resources saved after the purchase of various green office products. Our unique partnerships and streamlined distribution channels allow us to deliver over 95% of shipments the next day with no additional costs passed on to our customers. At present we have over 2.5 million subscribed customers.

We're the studio that created MarketPublique.com.

In addition to MarketPublique, we've got a half dozen clients, ranging from the super-sexy to kinda-bread-n-butter; big-business to non-profit.

We're pretty overwhelmed. Stuff is slipping through the cracks. We're leaving projects on the table -- which could be yours.

We need a junior-ish designer, with some eagerness to learn, that's willing to sit down and own some of this workload -- we want to continue to deliver high quality work to our clients. Most of our clients are web startups for whom we're tailoring high-impact, low-overhead user experiences.

We only take on projects that are interesting to us, and get work mostly based on our reputations.

Our ideal future colleague would be someone a year or two out of a d-education, that is more broad than deep, with some exposure to web application design. Moderate knowledge of typography, grid based systems, visual design, and front-end development. Not a requirement, but minimal exposure to PHP or an equivalent language could be useful. We don't write code -- but a rudimentary understand of it can lead to much better design.

It is an ABSOLUTE requirement that you are highly proficient in Adobe Illustrator, and have knowledge of how to put files back and forth to a server. In almost every project we mock-up a user experience (ie. bid on an auction) with image maps. Good writing skills are also a requirement, as we frequently need to document the less obvious parts of an experience for an engineering team. Our system for doing this is pretty innovative in this space -- and has gotten a lot of positive feedback.

Our studio is Williamsburg, near the Bedford stop on the L train.
1) A resume;
2) a couple of links you're proud of;
3) a sentence or two about how you made them;
4) how much time you'd be interested in committing;
5) and your hourly rate.
