And please, research the breed of dog you want before you decide to adopt it. That's why there are so many homeless animals in the first place.   • Older pets present you with a "what you see is what you get" - their personalities are developed and they know who they are. A kitten or puppy's personality is still unknown and you do not know what type of adult they will become.


  • They've gone through the kitten or puppy stage and therefore you'll not experience the chewing or curtain climbing stage as young ones are prone to do in their quest for great adventure. Older pets are typically calmer and more settled into life. Older pets, especially those who have once known it, appreciate love and attention and quickly learn what's expected of them to gain and keep that love and attention. Younger pets are like human children - they love the attention but don't stand in their way too long - playtime is the priority!


  • Older dogs who are offered for adoption by shelters or rescue agencies generally have had some training, both in obedience and house manners. Older cats and dogs have learned what "no" means and how to leave the furniture, carpets, shoes, and other "chewables" alone. (If they hadn't learned that, they wouldn't have gotten to be "older" dogs).


  • They have been "socialized" and learned what it takes to get along with humans and, in many cases, other dogs and cats, as well.


  • You can be sure of the pet's full size and over all appearance as an adult.


  • By adopting an older pet, we can make a statement about compassion and the value of all life at all ages, as well as register a protest against the indiscriminate and inhumane breeding of dogs and cats, whether it is for profit or to "teach the children about birth." And, of course, just as a puppy or kitten has its whole life ahead of them, so does an older pet have the rest of their life in front of them. You can give that older pet the best years of their life while at the same time bringing a wonderful addition into your family. Another consideration is the larger goal of making the U.S. a "no-kill" nation. By setting the example of adopting a pet who would be otherwise euthanized just because of their age, you can help create the climate that will enable the U.S. to attain that goal.
There is another topic that comes up when considering the adoption of an older pet. The question goes something like this - 'well why would someone just relinquish a pet they've had for years? There certainly *must* be something wrong with him/her!'

The truth of the matter is that there is more than likely nothing wrong with the pet at all. Pets of all ages are relinquished for any number of reasons. The family may have discovered they no longer have time for a pet, they may have moved out of the country, the human guardian may have passed away, someone has developed an allergy to pet dander..the list goes on and on but you get the picture. Homeless pets are not homeless because there is anything wrong with them at all; they are simply victims of circumstance and dependent on humans to provide them with a home. Sometimes we fail miserably at doing something that was simply our responsibility.

The next time you are considering adding to your family, remember the older pets waiting quietly in their crates for someone to notice them.

We were out with them for about 3.5 hours. Our spot in the parade was behind a brass band and in front of two motorcycles and all the dogs were unaffected by the noise. We walked through crowds of people with PERFECT behavior.

All the dogs walked had perfect leash manners, were incredibly sweet with young kids and adults (even kissing them in the face), got along great with each other and all the other dogs we met, respond to simple commands, have absolutely no food aggression or resource quarding and are available for adoption!

Rusty-An absolutely eye-catching, 3.5 year old, male Great Dane mix. Gets along well with cats. Very cute and playful, but becomes very attached and may show signs of separation anxiety. Can't be in a home where he'll be left alone for a regular 9-5 schedule.

Evelyn-Petite 2 year old whippet, terrier, pit bull mix. She is only about 35 pounds, a unique light grey and white beauty. She is an absolute doll, loves everyone she meets and is quite calm for a young dog. She's perfectly behaved in all situations, including the car, and could easily adapt to any situation (even being home alone for a long time). Evelyn learned her name, sit, paw and stay all in one day. She'll even sit down and wait when there are many distractions around.

Benny-7 month old DEAF Beagle. This guy is such a sweetie and a fast learner. He got the most attention at the parade because he so excitedly greets everyone he can reach. He will treat you as if you've been best friends for life, at the first greeting. He doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body and would be great with kids of any age. Owner must be experienced because of his special need.

Max-9 year old Beagle/Black Lab mix. Of all the dogs, this senior held up the best. He maintained his energy level after hours of walking. He's a very young 9! He weighs about 25-30 pounds and is a real cutie. He is great with other dogs, but can be an attention hog and should be the only pet in a home. He's served his time and really deserves a home.

Dexter-1 or 2 year old Bassett. Like all the others, Dexter is perfectly behaved and great with all people. He's in great shape and is a really unique looking pure bred Bassett (mostly black). He can't get enough treats or love and is easily trained using these rewards.

DIAMOND is a beautiful 11-year old female, brown and white Shepherd/Corgi mix that weights 51 lbs. No matter what breeds makes her up, we think she is swell. She was an unfortunate victim of the housing and credit crisis, which resulted in her owner having to surrender Diamond on Sept 16th because she is now homeless. She's pretty, low key, reserved and quiet and is missing her owner terribly. We've seen Diamond with big dogs, and she is quite appropriate. We think she could live with children if the children were quiet and gentle and gave her space she would be fine. Diamond is very heartbroken. She has lived in the same home since she was just a puppy, until her guardians became homeless. When a person surrenders a dog of this age to a municipal shelter, the dog has a very slim chance of being adopted, which is why we stepped in to save her. You would never know she is eleven years old. She gets around like she is just five. Diamond is in need of a home where she will know true love and where she will never have to part with those she loves again. She is truly heartbroken and needs someone to love. Will it be YOU? Marilyn has been a personal stand and unsubsidized resource for the preservation and rehabilitation of wildlife. I have been the same stand for domestic animals. We have decided to join forces and create an opportunity to further our most heartfelt endeavor. At the point in our lives when our mortality is in sight we have decided to create an institution that will not only live beyond us but be a model for many generations of what is possible and the only moral solution for a problem that society has mishandled for our entire lives.
By pooling our resources and soliciting your help we are committed to the creation of no-kill animal sanctuary that will save the lives of countless animals, wild and domestic. We will also institute programs of adoption, rehabilitation and community participation. In doing so, we will change the consciousness of our community of what is right and was always possible.
We will, with your help, create an all inclusive animal rescue that will never deny care to any compromised creature, wild or domestic. With the support of the community we will rehabilitate, place or keep all the animals we’re given the opportunity to save. Moreover, it is and always has been our responsibility as benevolent human beings.
With your help and participation we will create a model for generations to come of the only correct solution. The victory for many of us will be never fearing the fate of our most beloved companions ever again. BASIC OBEDIENCE & GOOD MANNERS I
You will learn the foundation of basic manners for dogs. This class is designed for dogs that have had no prior training or were unsuccessful at previous training attempts. It also builds on the skills learned in Puppy Kindergarten. We will discuss polite behavior, jumping, barking, nipping and house soiling. Your dog will learn impulse control and calm behaviors to help you feel more in control. This class will also take basic obedience commands—such as sit, wait, stay, down, come, walk nicely, no jumping up, leave-it—and teach you how to apply them to daily life with your dog. We use positive, creative techniques to teach your dog how to think and how to make good choices. These techniques help build confidence in your dog while forging a trusting bond between you and your pup.

Dominance vs. Leadership: Basic Obedience & Good Manners, level 1, will give you a variety of techniques to help you be a good leader instead of using intimidation techniques to gain a dominant status over your dog. Divine K-9 believes in creating a place of mutual respect, trust, and appreciation between human and canine.

Classes are limited to 7 dogs so you can get more one-on-one attention! Dogs 6 months and older are welcome.

The fee for the class is $280 for 7 sessions. We meet for one hour each week on Tuesdays. The next rotation of classes begins October 7, 2008. You may choose from two offered time slots: 7pm or 8:15pm.

Jorge and Bobbie have written for various publications covering topics on dog training and behavior. While running Divine K-9, Inc., Jorge and Bobbie were also employed as pet behavior counselors with the ASPCA Animal Behavior Center for close to two years. In addition to teaching classes, they evaluated, trained, and rehabilitated shelter dogs surrendered by the public as well as those seized by Humane Law Enforcement, as seen on the Animal Planet television show Animal Precinct. Jorge and Bobbie are currently employed part-time at the New Rochelle Humane Society in Westchester County. Their responsibilities include implementing training programs for dogs with special needs, training volunteers and staff, and working hands-on with dogs to help make them more adoptable. We will create a dog park environment in which you will observe the dogs at play. This class will teach you how to read your dog's body language and be aware of what you are saying to your dog with your body. We will observe how dogs communicate with one another by allowing the dogs in this class interact with one another.We will show you how and when to deliver consequences for poor choices made at during play. We will show you how to teach your dog to control his impulses, rather than go after a dog in an inappropriate manner. You will be able to successfully call your dog out of tense situations before he gets into trouble. By knowing what your dog is saying, you can help prevent frustration as well as keep your dog safe.
