QUESTION: Looking for someone to teach me flatpicking guitar. I'm an intermediate fingerpicker, but never worked with a flatpick. I'm also interested in finding someone to teach my 9 year old son beginning guitar. We live in Tarrytown, NY.
ANSWER: We offer flatpicking guitar lessons and also kids lessons at our studio at Greystone (west of Broadway just south of Hastings.) We have several of our top teachers from NYC Guitar School come up to the Greystone studio 5 days a week.

QUESTION: My son will be 3 1/2 in September and loves music. I was thinking of looking into music lessons for him, probably violin. Is he too young? Should I consider a different instrument? Where should I look? I am in Edgemont/Scarsdale.
ANSWER: Hello, I think that you should put your son in piano/keyboard lessons instead of violin. The piano is the most basic and fundamental instrument in Western Music, and because the hammer and mallet system plays the strings all a student has to do is press a key down; because of this, piano is traditionally taught to children under 6 yrs. old
Piano also teaches the most about harmony and how melodies and harmonies relate to each other. I think at the age your son is at, it is especially important to find a teacher that will foster an exploration of the instrument. This is the root of improvisation, which is likewise deeply connected to music composition and self expression. By creating a learning environment where your son is encouraged to explore the instrument, he will likewise grow to understand it more intimately and on his terms; the piano/keyboard makes a great instrument to do this with because it is easy to play a note and not much harder to play 2 notes at once.
I predominantly teach guitar and bass guitar, but I also teach piano. I have been classically trained as a music composer and have also studied classical guitar, piano, and singing. All of my lessons are centered around fostering a comprehensive understanding of the musical language. I have had many success stories and currently have former students signed to record labels. Starting your son as young as he is can mold him into a master musician by adulthood.

QUESTION: My 14-year-old child has been playing trumpet for a few years. I'm considering purchasing him a trumpet (instead of renting). Is it worth buying a trumpet at this point? If so...what makes/models should I consider?
ANSWER: Yes, I think it is worth it for you to purchase a trumpet. In the long run it is the least expensive way to go.
As for instruments I have a few suggestions:
If your son just wants to "Have fun" and be one of the bunch then buy a good "Student" level instruments such as a Bach Trumpet Model TR500 which Has a list price of $895.00 and we sell it for $537.00
If your son is one of the better players and plays in the jazz band and does some soloing, you might want to consider a "Performance" level or even a "Professional" level trumpet.
One performance trumpet to consider is the Besson Trumpet Model 800-2 (Silver plated) which has a list price of $1600.00 and we sell it for $949.95
