TAKE BACK THE TAP NEW YORK!

A timely social justice and environmental campaign!
My name is Rachael and I'm a coordinator for the Take Back the Tap
Campaign in NYC. Take Back the TAP Food and Water Watch is a national
&international campaign coordinated by the Food and Water Watch
(foodandwaterwatch.org). This is a great learning OPPORTUNITY for all
organizers, including people with little to no experience. Anyone who
is seeking to BUILD THEIR RESUME or get more experience with
coalition building, field organizing, and/or press communication
should really check it out.

WATER ACCESS is a RIGHT for people and nature.
Clean, safe, and affordable water is a BASIC PUBLIC SERVICE not a
LUXURY ITEM sold to the highest bidder. Workers who work in our water
waste and purification systems should have fair and safe working
conditions. Water should be managed in a way that is ecologically
responsible and socially just.

COME LEARN ABOUT the TAKE BACK THE TAP CAMPAIGN
HELP NEW YORK TAKE BACK THE TAP!
When: JULY 8th Tuesday 2:00pm - 4:00 pm
What: Info session & Activist kick-off event!
Where: 215 Lexington, bt. 33rd and 34th off the 34th street 6 train
OUR WATER SYSTEM IS NEARLY 100 YEARS OLD AND IT NEEDS INVESTMENT NOW.

SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, July 19th, 2:30-5:00

Across the country, corporations are coming into communities across the
country and buying up water sources and infrastructure because FEDERAL
FUNDING FOR WATER SYSTEMS has been systematically slashed over the
last 8 years and municipal systems have been denied the necessary
funding.

Private water-mongering corporations promise community members that
the bottled water plants and private water management companies will
bring jobs and economic prosperity, but this is a total hoax.
Companies come into towns get the rights to the water, extract it
like crazy in a disastrously unsustainable way, and give nothing back to the
local communities except environmental degradation and health
problems. Companies in the bottled water industry charge consumers
MORE PER CAPITA THAN OIL PRICES for bottled water and make fortunes.
Meanwhile, very few new jobs are actually created by the addition of
the plant or private management to a region (the average bottled water
plant for example employs 24 people, and usually, half of these are
not local.). The jobs that are available are dangerous and lower paid
than the average manufacturing. WATER PRIVATIZATION LEADS to
significant PRICE INCREASES for EVERYONE (up to 2,000 per cent!)

Therefore, the problem we are targeting this summer is water
privatization. Shifting water from the common good to a corporate
product undermines public investment in safe tap water, increases
inequality in access to clean, healthy water, harms the environment,
and fails to provide long-term solutions to the global problem of
water scarcity. Plus, bottled water is actually LESS REGULATED than
tap water. The FDA (the Food and Drug Administration) handle bottled
water, but only one person on staff works part time on enforcing and
monitoring bottled water regulations. The EPA (Environmental
Protection Agency) have much more stringent regulations and diligent
testing practices in the management of NYC tap water on the other hand.

The World Health organization says that by 2025, two thirds of the
world will not have access to safe water. Access to water is already a
huge issue in many communities world wide, and the problems
associated with water privatization disproportionately impact the poor.

People who TAKE BACK THE TAP in NYC are joining an INTERNATIONAL
MOVEMNT to make water a basic human right, and to prevent it from
becoming the oil of the 21st century. Access to water or lack thereof
has become one of the world's indicators of inequality and the this
campaign addresses the widening gap between the rich and the poor and
challenges it at a fundamental level.

WE NEED LONG TERM SOLUTIONS TO THE GLOBAL WATER CRISIS NOW.

Our summer campaign has two major components. The first is to pressure
the government to pass a Federal Water Trust Fund bill which is being
introduced this summer.

CLEAN WATER TRUST FUND

The trust fund would ensure that local water systems get the
INVESTMENT that they direly need to maintain and improve safety and
efficiency. NYC has some of the best, healthiest, most delicious tap
water in the country, but our
municipal system is old and needs investment now to keep working and
to meet new and improved health goals.

Also, the bill mandates an ongoing implementation of more SUSTAINABLE
water management practices and a localized approach
to water and especially storm water management. Integrated water
management, porous pavement, increasing vegetation, and many other
ecological design solutions are part of the bill. This would entail
new jobs, a healthier environment for us all here in the city, and
many other health and social benefits. S.W.I.M. (Storm water
infrastructure
matters) is one of our coalition partners.

RESTAURANT OUTREACH & exposing the corporate LIES of the BOTTLED WATER
INDUSTRY

The other major goal of this summers campaign is to expose the purity
myth of bottled water and to get restaurants throughout NYC to join
other businesses across the country that have committed to banning
bottled water from their menus. Our focus is on the 15th
district--Harlem, the upper east and west sides, and the South Bronx,
but since we want publicity and to educate consumers, we are making
the restaurant pledge a city-wide project.

A key part of this is building grassroots pressure on bottled water
and multinational corporations. Bottled water is one of the most
obvious examples of the problems inherent in water privatization.
Bottled water costs more per capita than oil at this point. Up to 40 %
of bottled water--including Coke's Dasani and Pepsi's Aquafina--are
the same tap water we get in our homes. Since these companies rarely
pay anything for the water that they extract, they are marking up a
public resource anywhere for 240 to 10,000 times the price of tap
water and they are making a killing off of consumers!

The bottled water industry results in two million tons of plastic
waste annually and production of plastic bottles in the US alone
requires more than 1 million barrels of oil, enough to fuel 1 million
cars. 86% of these bottles end up in US landfills. The siting of
landfills is an environmental justice issue in and of itself. From
Maine to Michigan to California, the bottled water industry uses their
political power to steamroll over local concerns about the negative
environmental and economic impacts of their facilities. Whether its
RWE in Stockton, Nestle in Michigan, Coca Cola in India, or Bechtel in
Bolivia, corporations are not being held responsible for the harmful
costs of their damaging influence on local communities. The safety of
bottled water is often taken for granted because the industry spends
bucket-loads advertising the purity of their product. But in reality,
bottled water is regulated by the FDA and is not tested nearly enough
to ensure its healthfulness. Tap water, which is regulated by the EPA,
is tested multiple times each day. No government agency regulates
bottled water and the FDA only has ONE PART-TIME staff member in
charge of all bottled water issues! The plastic itself contains
chemicals that can leach pthalates, endocrine disruptors that can
contribute to birth defects, cancer, and developmental problems.
Bottled water is NEVER tested after it is packaged and has NO
expiration date.

We are looking for activists and students who are interested in
organizing around the issue of of WATER ACCESS, which is a critical
issue right now globally and nationally. SDSers are great organizers
and we'd love some of your skills, energy, and participation in this
campaign!I think it will be lots of fun, and a good learning
experience for any organizer because we will be working with the
press,the community, local officials.

If this campaign sounds like something you might want to get involved in, contact me! Best, Rachael

Chameleon Theatre Co., Ltd., a small-but-growing 501(c)3 non-profit needs volunteers to help plan and organize a fundraising event for late October.

We will be presenting a selection of songs from new musicals we are developing at a renowned Manhattan location (exact date and time to be announced) to raise money for producing those musicals, and for other programs: classes, workshops, youth theatre (for young/family audiences and by young actors) free (or cheap) tickets for students, seniors and the socially disadvantaged, etc.

This is NOT a casting call for actors, singers or dancers, but for people who want to do the grunt work!

We need help in all areas: publicity, advertising, marketing, programming and fundraising.

We are also forming an active, working Advisory Board made up of theatre-goers and members of the business community who are not afraid to roll up their sleeves, make phone calls and knock on doors.

We hope, eventually, to expand our operations beyond New York City, and to have our own performance space.

We are dedicated to making theatre adventurous, accessible and affordable by focusing on not only new works, but reviving worthy but neglected works from earlier times, and to finding new and valid reinterpretations of the classics.

Charity project in support of an orphanage in Bulgaria (Volunteer abroad)

"Rodopski pansion" is one of the biggest social establishments of that kind in Bulgaria, providing home and care for more than 140 young people at the ages of 5 to 16. Most of them have grown up in other children's social homes, and, when becoming teenagers, they come to "Rodopski pansion" in Plovdiv. They attend different high schools in the town.

The socially disadvantaged background of most of the children is considered to be the reason for many problems, which they face in school, in their contacts with other people, in their everyday life. Those who have completed 19 years are not subject of social care any more. They have to leave the orphanage and start an independent living. Many of them turn to be unprepared to make this step after spending all their lives up to now in Social care institutions. That's why the interaction with other young people from different countries while working, playing, learning together in the frame of an international volunteer project is essential for their socialization and adaptation.

The volunteers will be engaged with organizing variety of activities like: sports events, gardening, group games, thematic workshops, walks in the city of Plovdiv, visits to different sights and events, etc. for the children and the youngsters in order to optimize their free time during the summer period. Some maintenance and domestic works will be done together with the residents.

Because of the lack of funds and the difficult economic situation of the social establishment, the volunteers are invited to contribute with their creativity, enthusiasm and ideas. They have to know that this is definitely not a touristic or leisure program in which they just have to join in with the orphans. The experience of more than five years proves that even without expensive events, this can be an unforgettable and really rewarding time for the both sides - the volunteers and the youngsters.

The Orphanage is planning a new playground for the kids. If they get support from the sponsors and the construction starts as anticipated, the volunteers will help with the final works, cleaning the site and decoration of the playing equipment.

Volunteer
project: The local host of this project is a center that promotes social and sport activities in Cancun city. They realize over 34 cultural and sport activities with around 1,300 families in Cancun.
Cancun is a marvel of nature but the population is growing very rapidly. This is why it is very important to educate the children in environmental protection awareness and valorization of their local culture, history and roots. It is very important to create awareness that there is only one planet and to promote values such as flexibility, understanding other cultures, tolerance and team work. This project is organized with the aim to promote voluntary service activities among the children and adults through sports and cultural exchanges. A group of international volunteers is invited to help in the organization of sport events and also to participate in social activities to support the local native people of the Yucatan Peninsula. At the same time, the group will have the opportunity to experience and learn about the local culture, life of local people and the traditions of the Maya culture.

The international volunteers, along with local people, will organize sport events (aquatic sports, football) and will help in the coordination of the events and the participants. After the sport activities, volunteers will participate in a program for protection of the marine turtles and a special species of crab called “the blue crab” that is released in Cancun beaches to prevent its extinction. The participants will help by releasing and counting the baby turtles and help in the transportation of the blue crabs to the place where they are released. Besides these activities, the international team will also participate in reforestation activities in local communities and parks.

"Giving exerts a special influence upon Man's spiritual evolution from gross ignorance to growing enlightenment. The unseen force behind giving is so redeeming that it can resolve problems and enhance every aspect of your life. We need to be more like the Sun which continuously and without discrimination gives freely of its light and warmth to all. Grow spiritually, glow bright like the Sun and serve by being a lighthouse. Serve by being the answer not the question."
- Joseph Michael Levry, Gurunam, Founder of Universal Force Healing Center

KARMA YOGA is the action of selfless service that is performed with devotion, commitment and joy. In turn your karma is cleared.
Volunteers are the life of our Center. We all lead very busy lives and are always looking for ways to bring more balance. One way to do this is to give time in service. It may sound a little contrary because we automatically think "I am so busy, I have no spare time!", but it is not. Service has the ability to transform darkness into light, confusion into clarity, disease into health, harmony and much more.

*** Animal lovers needed as Volunteers ***

Do you love animals and are you able to commit a few minutes of your time daily ?

You can help by spending about 10-15 minutes for about 2-3 times a week to find animal -related news to post blog entries
Example:
Create a myspace and facebook account, or better still create your own blog / website? E.g. see my website/ blog : http://www.Heart4Animals.com

Education is the key to reducing animal suffering. I started updating this website with animal-related news because I got to see images of what happens to animals hidden away from our sheltered city lives.

I need people who feel deeply enough about animals such as these Animals at http://www.heart4animals.com/2008/04/18/uncategorized/against-fur-farms-in-china-we-need-500-signatures.htm to spread their message around .

The more people know what animals go through, the more people will refrain from buying products which will further increase animal suffering e.g. fur / fur-lined outercoats.

PART 2

If you know of anyone who knows Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Farsi, or any other language ? These are enormous markets that not exposed to the cruelty involved in the animal trade, and also, the animal organizations have not been able to penetrate into these markets deep enough.( See http://www.heart4animals.com/2008/04/29/uncategorized/animal-suffering-continues-in-korea.htm Try to enlist people who know such language to start blogs / facebook / myspace / zorpia accounts to spread the message around.

On behalf of all the caged and defenceless animals around the world, Thank you for lending your voice and work for them.

It’s a private pristine rain forest, protected under Brazilian federal law. Six hectares of the forest are devoted to permaculture with the aim of creating a model school for local communities. The Reserve belongs to the Atlantic Forest biome, one the world’s richest in biodiversity, of which at present only 8% remains. In 2000 the Atlantic Forest in Bahia was declared by Unesco a Reserve of the Biosphere. In the Janaina Reserve, an international volunteer project is organized in cooperation with a local sustainable development organization, managing the area and also working with some local farmers’ cooperatives in the fair trade net.
The project's participants will be working in various projects of conservation, while having the rare opportunity of living in a pristine forest and having great opportunities of wild life watching.
The main tasks will be: reforestation in some small but critical border areas of the forest, permaculture, anti-fire and anti-hunting watch. In August it will be possible to plant the tree saplings raised in the nursery where the seeds are put in January.
Participants will also be taught all the basic principles of handcrafted chocolate production: from harvesting to fermentation, drying, roasting of beans and finally handwork processing. Participants will also be able to learn some elements of tropical botany and forestry farming.
The project activities will be held from Monday to Friday. Saturday and Sunday participants will be staying in Itacaré.
Itacaré is a beautiful coastal village, the rainforest reach the beaches and there are magnificent waves. The area was named Costa do Cacao and its capital town Ilheus is the setting of many novels by Jorge Amado.
Language: The official language of the project is English. Portuguese is the only language spoken by local people.
Earn cash for your opinions in our Stamford, CT office!

A Market Research Focus Group is a form of qualitative research in which a group of people are asked about their attitudes, ideas and beliefs towards varying topics i.e. a product, service, concept, advertisement, idea, packaging or current event. Questions are asked in a relaxed interactive group in our office. Participants are free to talk with other group members.

At the conclusion of the session you are given a cash gift for your time. The average group usually pays $75.-$150. per 1-2 hour session; however some can go up to $200. or more. You would be told in advance exactly how long the group runs (i.e. 1 hr, 2 hrs...) and how much it pays. Groups run during the day and after work hours. Limit 1 group every 6 months.

We have new studies daily, weekly.
VOLUNTEERS CALLED TO ACTION.

”War-torn Congo’s University Needs a Miracle” is the title of our video posted on YOUTUBE.
The Congo was in a brutal six-year war that killed over four million people, and destroyed physical and social infrastructures. Schools have been dismantled, making the Congo’s youth the biggest victims of the war called “The World’s deadliest war,” by Time Magazine.
There is a humanitarian imperative and a sense of urgency to rebuild the ravaged country, including the dismantled American University of Kinshasa also known as “Université Franco-Américaine de Kinshasa” in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The vision of the University is to serve as a bridge between Africa and the US, Canada and the International community. It promotes exchanges and partnerships for the mutual benefits of people on both sides.

VOLUNTEER - TAKE ACTION:

Volunteers are needed to get the word out online about our YOUTUBE VIDEO on the humanitarian imperative and a sense of urgency to help rebuild the War-torn Congo’s University. The ultimate goal is to bring the youth back to the classroom again. As a Volunteer, you will send messages to friends, family members, universities, students, student clubs, faculty, philanthropists, athletes, celebrities, religious groups, non-profit organizations and business people; post online information and link to the Video: facebook, myspace, youtube, emails, blogs, and websites.
Encourage people participation in any ways or means they can, even with the smallest amount, $15, $25, …, $100, …$1000 or more.
Keep us posted about your action, initiatives or progress.
If you ever wanted to be a ghost in Iceland, than this is the opportunity that you have been waiting for.
Stokkseyri is a coastal South Icelandic town in the fertile farming district region of Flói. It is known for its black sandy beach which becomes quite crowded with tourists during summer. The beach is wide and full of driftwood. A long sea wall was erected in the late 18th century to prevent encroachment by the sea and as a shield against Ölfusá river's flooding and high waves. The entire coastal area is open lowland and very windswept with shallow shores.

The village has a rich art and cultural life. Paintings and glass galleries, Ghost Centre and the Center of Ethnomusicology, which are all situated in the Hólmaröst cultural centre. An interesting museum, "Þuríðar cottage" is in Stokkseyri, built in memory of Lady Þuríður Einarsdóttir, captain of a fishing boat in the late 18th and early 19th century, a time when it was considered a unique profession for a woman. The Ghost Centre in Stokkseyri is a Ghost Museum with all of the most famous ghosts in Iceland located in a building by the harbour. Guests walk through the ghost-maze, where they will experience the stories in the environment where they happened. The stories can be listened to in English, German and Icelandic.

Here is a nice description of Stokkseyri in the Icelandic newspaper Grapewine:
“It is a community where one native has a polar bear in the living room, some have horses in their backyard, and almost everyone knows the Foo Fighters on a first name basis, Stokkseyri is located on the south coast only 45 minutes from Reykjavík. This small village of about 500 people is renowned for its natural beauty, but more impressive are the creative inhabitants living there, inspired by the shore and wildlife in the surrounding area.
Stokkseyri wasn’t much of a draw for tourists a decade ago. Natives almost entirely depended on the fishing industry, and the 26-metre-high lighthouse Knarrarósviti was really the only attraction for travellers. Times have changed, the fish processing moved to nearby town Þorlákshöfn and with companies like Kajakferðir, Töfragarðurinn, restaurant Við fjöruborðið and all kinds of museums the village is becoming a popular spot for both locals and foreigners arriving by thousands every year to take part in various activities.”

The volunteers will be acting as ghosts in the Ghost museum and also, they will be working closely with the staff of the museum helping them with all other necessary tasks. They will also give a helping hand in a family park, taking care of the animals and the visiting guests. This project is perfect for people with artistic skills, especially theatre. Five volunteers will be participating in each group.
