Septik Nexus was formed from members of Blackkat and other crews to find new ways to express our music and ideas in NYC. Our focus has been park events, outdoor campout parties, and parades. We rocked the 1st Dance Parade and last year's Halloween Parade with the most solid DIY sound system in both parades, and we were at the backbone of one of the only, if not the the only, multi-sound area campout event featuring NYC artists and musicians in recent years (the 777 and 888 events). Septik Nexus has also been a primary backbone of NYC's longest running independent free electronic dance music park event, the annual Blackkat Mayday, and our members have been instrumental in the fight against the absurd NYC cabaret law and virtually alone in New York (save a few activist groups such as DanceSafe and the Drug Policy Alliance) in our fight against the RAVE Act (written by Joe Biden).

So how are we rewarded for our efforts? We were banned from this year's Halloween Parade for being "too loud"!

Below is the word-for-word transcript of our online conversation with the director of the parade, Jeanne Fleming. Apparently we were just a little too wildly creative for the "Nation's Most Wildly Creative Public Participatory Event" (quoted from the Halloween Parade website). See our comments below…

And note while reading---we know for a fact there are other buses in this year's parade, so her statement about "no buses" is simply not true. Also, she makes no mention of the massive corporate trucks that will be there this year as they are every year…but more on this in the comments after the transcript!


FIRST—this was our initial request for this year. Last year we participated in the parade to critical and public acclaim; photos of our bus were featured in the Village Voice and elsewhere…

Dear Jeanne, (or to whom it may concern),

My name is Andrew … of Septik Nexus. In 2007 Halloween Parade Anthony … and John … corresponded with you and we participated as Zombie Gravehound Tours. 2007 was a blast and we wish to participate again in 2008.

As you may recall, Septik Nexus is a totally non-commercial/non-profit collective that share music intensity promoting values or free speech and free expression.

Dear Andrew,

I am sorry to say that we can no longer have buses in the Parade. The Police have made a decision against it. It is just too out of proportion to the rest of the more human scale event. WE also got a lot of complaints about the loudness of the float last year from folks in the neighborhood--so our sound restrictions are much tighter now.

I am happy you had fun last year...

( note the false "no bus" claim…and also the interesting comment about the "human scale" of the event…I have been to the parade several times and all I remember about it is one big truck after another! )


NEXT is our response to her reply:


Thank you for the prompt response. Actually, this year we will not be using the bus but a smaller vehicle and actually have much less sound. That being said where do/could we stand. We are working on some really exciting themes for Halloween 2008 and would very much like to add to the creative energy of the event. Looking forward!

COMMENTS ::

Obviously none of this would be the case if we were giving the parade and the float truck company thousands of dollars as the corporate-funded floats do…It says on the parade website that they will still allow trucks from "sponsors". So much for the "Creative Public Participatory Event" aspect of this "wild" parade…
We know that all the big NYC parades work directly with one single float truck company based in New Jersey. All the corporate-funded floats must go through this company and spend thousands of dollars on those trucks. Of course this company has no interest in seeing DIY sound systems that can compete with them or even show them up in the parades...and it's hard for us to believe that this also is not part of our dismissal…
Last year there were several other trucks at least as loud as ours…and much more dangerous; the float trucks have people dancing on a moving trailer with no guard rails or containment of the crowd at all…and this has been the standard at the parade for decades…It's pretty hard to believe that we were the loudest rig ever!
…so it seems that they are telling us that if we had only shown up with a small quiet sound system and small vehicle, we would have been invited back….instead we are punished for doing our thing well, without corporate sponsorship.
We can't help but feel that our music choice has something to do with this decision as well. By now members of Blackkat are used to being "blackballed" by the underground music event culture (not to mention the mainstream club culture) for refusing to play "safe" dance music and instead supporting innovative, non-commercial styles. We are pretty sure if we had played KTU club music or generic house records we would not have had the same problem.
So there it is...NYC has become and continues to be nothing more than a superficial image of what is innovative or challenging in the arena of music and public events. Clubs in Manhattan generally support spineless DJs that cater to the lowest common denominator so as to keep the bar busy selling overpriced cocktails. Only a handful of musicians in the electronic music world in New York support any true innovation while more and more creative artists and musicians head for Europe or other American cities in greater and greater numbers as they find they have no place in the city they have worked in for years…
...and now that the country's largest "Creative Public Participatory Event" shows that what really matters is the cash donation that you make, and not the quality of your performance, what's a true sound system to do?

As for me personally, after being unplugged in mid-sentence at Mayday, virtually blacklisted from DJing at any NYC party, and now owning a record label that has sold thousands of records across Europe and almost none to any New York store or distributor, after 13 years of constant contributions to and defense of NYC music and event culture...all I can say is… You want art and music that's safe and non-threatening, you want to be wildly creative but not TOO wild or creative, you want a city that pretends to be the leader of creative expression but in reality is more about money and image than true artistic freedom … now you got it!

If you have any of the above symptoms of COPD, it's time to see your doctor. The earlier this disease is diagnosed and treated, the better your chances are at arresting further damage.

If you are diagnosed with COPD, there are different treatments available, depending on how severe your symptoms are. Treatment can and does improve quality of life for many people. While the disease is not reversible, it can be slowed and actions taken to improve breathing. The number one thing you can do to improve your condition if you haven't already is to QUIT SMOKING. If you don't, the disease will progress faster, and the treatments won't help as much as they would if you were smoke free.

Treatment for COPD includes:

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a program of combined exercise, disease management counseling and training to help the person become more active and do what they can to slow the progression of symptoms.
Oxygen treatment is used when the patient has severe COPD symptoms, known usually at this point as emphysema. The oxygen level in the blood is too low, which leaves the person quite breathless. Inhaling oxygen will help them get enough oxygen and there will be less difficulty breathing. Depending on the need of the person, a doctor may advise using oxygen for part of the day, or all of the time.
Surgery is sometimes recommended when other treatments have not provided any relief.

COPD symptoms can worsen very quickly. When this happens, people may find that breathing suddenly becomes much more difficult; they may get a fever; experience more coughing and sputum that has changed colors. Be sure to get in touch with your doctor if this happens to you.

If you experience any of these symptoms, seek emergency help:
You have trouble talking or walking
You have a very fast or irregular heartbeat
Your lips or fingernails are gray or blue
Your breathing is fast and hard, even after you've used your medications


It's a good idea to put together a list which includes the numbers of your doctor and hospital, as well as what medications you're taking. Make sure you have the numbers of people who can take you to the doctor also, if necessary. Put this list in a central location, such as on the refrigerator. Let other family members know that it's there.
