Many Americans struggle with excess weight that often leads to chronic pain, diseases, and may greatly contribute to a poorer quality of life. The Exercise and Nutritional Literacy Project (ENLP) seeks to do something about this.

ENLP is a non-profit, free weight loss program dedicated to serving NYC. Our program meets weekly and is an alternative to fee based, corporate run weight loss program. People using ENLP principles have changed their diet habits, exercise plans, and ultimately, their bodies. We are seeking people who, first want to change their weights, and secondly, may want to train others how to do the same.

Please email ENLProject@gmail.com for a free report on how to start losing weight today.

A Father's Right was written so that when my daughter grows into a woman, she may realize how hard her father fought a corrupt, incompetent and ignorant system, that claims to have "The Best Interest Of The Children In Mind". It is a true story about a problem that noone wants to address. The media and the Mayor turned away from a request to look into why my daughter and I were being kept apart. I was awarded for an act of heroism back in 2003, and while I was very greatful for all the attention, I also asked for help. When everyone ignored me I returned the awards back to "The John Walsh Show, The N.Y.Posts Liberty Medal 2003 (Courage), and the award given to me by Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. Only to be ignored again. My message to them is to put themselves in my shoes, having my daughter taken away from me like I was an animal in a zoo. Please read my story and put yourself in my shoes and tell a friend, and ask him to tell another, until my daughter hears that "I love her very very much, and that I miss her tremendously, and that I will be waiting for her, until I die.
Unite For Sight Volunteer Abroad Opportunities: As Featured Weekly on CNN International and Recently In The New York Times

Volunteer Abroad in Fall, Winter, Spring, or Summer: http://www.uniteforsight.org/volunteer-abroad

How Do I Apply? The application as well as complete details about Unite For Sight's international opportunities are available at http://www.uniteforsight.org/volunteer-abroad

Who Is Eligible To Volunteer Abroad?: Volunteers are 18 years and older, and there is no upper age limit. Volunteers range from undergraduate/college students to medical and optometry students, public health students and professionals, business students, filmmakers and photographers, nurses and nursing students, physician's assistants, teachers and educators, opticians, optometrists and ophthalmologists.

What Do Volunteers Do?: Volunteers receive hands-on clinical experience while assisting doctors in remote, rural villages. Volunteers learn about international health and eye care, learn clinical skills while working with patients and doctors, and, in one program location, have an opportunity to practice cataract surgery on a goat's eye.

The goal of Unite For Sight and its partner eye clinics and communities is to create eye disease-free communities. Unite For Sight’s volunteers (local and visiting) work with partner eye clinics to provide eye care in communities without previous access. The eye clinic’s eye doctors and Unite For Sight volunteers jointly provide community-based screening programs in rural villages. The clinic’s eye doctors diagnose and treat eye disease in the field, and surgical patients are brought to the eye clinic for surgery. Patients receive free surgery funded by Unite For Sight so that no patient remains blind due to lack of funds. Volunteers immediately see the joy on patients' faces when their sight is restored after years of blindness. These memories last a lifetime.

What Do Volunteers Say?:

"I can honestly say that everything I learned in 3 years of medical school paled in comparison to the 3 week experience I had in Accra (Ghana) in October 2007 as part of Unite For Sight. The program provides volunteers with a unique and hands-on involvement – being able to help out to the level of your training and comfort. My experience taught me that Ghanaian people are the friendliest people I have interacted with anywhere in the world, that ordinary people involved with Unite For Sight are making extraordinary differences, and that sitting in a classroom receiving a world-class education cannot match real life experiences while volunteering."--Varun Verma, UMDNJ Medical Student, Unite For Sight Volunteer in Accra, Ghana

Hundreds of volunteer narratives, volunteer diaries, as well as videos of alumni volunteers and partner eye doctors are available on the Unite For Sight website: http://www.uniteforsight.org/volunteer-abroad

Volunteer tutors work once or twice weekly with 8-12 adult literacy students and a co-tutor in a learning center. Tutors plan appropriate learning activities and consult regularly with an Educational Center Coordinator. Our biggest need is for tutors to volunteer 5:30-8:30pm at one of our mid-town tutorial centers.

We are also looking for volunteer teacher's assistants for morning and afternoon programs. We hold teacher-led classes in ABE (Adult Basic Education), ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Family Literacy. Classes are located in Harlem, Lower East Side and Bronx.

Required training for both volunteer tutors and teacher's assistants is provided by Literacy Partners. Training covers strategies for teaching reading, writing, and basic math skills to adult learners, and involves the opportunity to observe or participate in existing groups. Once training is completed (approx. 20hrs over 3-4 weeks) volunteers can tutor in any of our morning, afternoon, or evening programs. Trainings are usually held four times a year. An orientation is required before being invited to training.

If you do not have the time to participate in our 4 week training, we have non-tutoring volunteer assignments for intake counselors and test administrators at our new student orientation weekly on M/W evenings in midtown.

For more information, including orientation dates, contact the volunteer manager at volunteer@literacypartners.org.

Do you have both trauma and gambling problems? Participate in a study (Manhattan)

This study focuses on problems related to gambling and PTSD. “Gambling” refers to any form of games for money (such as slots, poker, blackjack, roulette, lottery tickets, keno, sports betting, etc.). "Trauma problems" refers to emotional difficulty getting over a serious incident (e.g. combat, child abuse, dv, car accident). For example, you may have problems sleeping, depression, flashbacks, etc.

You can call for a telephone screening (5-10 minutes). You then may be invited for an in-person assessment (2-3 hours), scheduled at your convenience at our professional office on the upper West Side. The assessment consists of an interview and possibly surveys.
You can receive up to $90 for completing the project. There are three parts (the first pays $20; the second $45; and the third, an additional $25). You may be eligible for all or just some of these parts of the study. We will explain it in detail if you call or email.

How to find out more: Call 212-523-4426 or email kmjcsw@aol.com (both phone and email are confidential). We are happy to answer any questions you may have.

Note: this study does not offer treatment of any kind, for any problem. However, all who contact us will be given resources for help with gambling, if desired.

The study is funded by the Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre.

I am a doctoral student in clinical psychology at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University in Chicago, IL. I am currently conducting a research project in which I need your help.

This is a study on addictive habits in the general population. I hope to learn more about the factors that contribute to addiction (or the lack thereof) in all different types of people.

Requirements for participation:

o must be 18 years old

o must have access to a computer and Internet

If you are eligible and decide to participate, a questionnaire will be given to you through a website on the Internet. You must take the questionnaire in one sitting, but will be given as much time as needed. However, it should take you approximately thirty (30) minutes to complete. Questions in this study are of a personal nature, and thus it is strongly encouraged that you complete the questionnaire in a place that provides enough confidentiality for you. We cannot and do not guarantee or promise that you will receive any benefits from this study. Your decision whether or not to participate in this study is anonymous.

To access the website with the questionnaires and to begin participation today go to:

Provided that the requirements for participation are met, you, the members of your organization, or anyone else (friends, family, other organizations) can forward this information and are invited to participate in this research study.

This research has been approved by the IRB at Argosy University, Chicago Campus. If you require the appropriate documentation showing my institution's approval to forward this email, I will be able to provide that for you. Please e-mail me with your request.

Now in its 5th year, the Sankofa Center for African Dance & Culture, an official 501(c)3 U.S.-based charitable organization is searching for artistic, teaching, and health-based volunteers for our on-going 2008 arts-based HIV/AIDS educational performance tour program in Ghana, West Africa.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

In Conjunction with UCLA Department of African Studies research, S.C.A.D.C. fuses traditional African dance, drama, & contemporary art genres with health information to educate Ghanaian youths & adults about HIV/AIDS. These very necessary performances are both entertaining & educational. Our program utilizes the vibrant energies of our volunteers & a local team to tour various villages & schools to help eradicate AIDS in Africa through art! We also conduct free rapid HIV testing in our village outreach to link those needing treatment with medical care. Visit our website to apply for upcoming programs if you’d like to be apart of this amazing and life-changing experience in 2008!

2008 PROGRAMS: Apply early as space is limited for each program

March 3rd - April 30th
May 1st - June 29th
July 3rd - August 31th
September 3rd - October 31st
November 1st - December 28th

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Individuals with a background in the arts, dance, drama, theatre, music, public health, medicine, and related fields are encouraged to apply. However, volunteers are not necessarily required to be performers. A major aspect of our work is teaching & counseling sexual health topics to village youth so applicants possessing peer health education skills are needed. We will train you if you lack the background. Assistants for pre-post counseling and rapid HIV testing are also needed, we can train appropriate applicants on the procedures as well. Our programs vary but as a volunteer you will be actively involved in the artistic presentation of our HIV/AIDS health campaigns through your specified program.
I thought it would be interesting to show how beautiful the male shape is in all it's glory not just based on preference, height, color, etc. I thought the New York City/New Jersey area is so diverse I figured I could compile shots of men of varying ages, and so on to pose in various poses of undress. I want the

$10 to do a memory experiment! (Union Square)

Interested in learning about memory???? My name is Charlie Stone and I am a PhD student from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia currently doing research overseas here at The New School for Social Research. However, I need participants to do my experiment. The experiment is two days. The first day will only take about 30 minutes (memory elicitation) and the second day (experiment) will take about an hour. You will be compensated $10 total, not per day. Compensation will be given on the second day, not the first.

A little more about the experiment: Broadly speaking, I am looking at the social influences on peoples' autobiographical memories. Autobiographical memories are those memories personal to us. Those that make us who we are. Therefore, people will have to be comfortable sharing some of their personal memories with other people. However, you can choose the memories. I merely provide a general category and the participant chooses their memory that fits it most appropriately. Nothing too personal has to be disclosed.

So Please, if you are easily bored and looking for something to do, let me know or if you just want to learn about memory and help out an aspiring researcher, please contact me. Also, if you are reading this posting a little later than it was posted and are wondering if I'm still looking for participants, I am. I will be needing participants all summer so feel free to tell your friends too.

Thanks

August 15 - August 30, 2008

Volunteer project: Itacaré lies 300 km south of Salvador de Bahia and Janaina Nature Reserve is located 10 km from Itacaré as the crow flies. It’s a private pristine rain forest, protected under Brazilian federal law. Six hectares of the forest are devoted to permaculture with the aim of creating a model school for local communities. The Reserve belongs to the Atlantic Forest biome, one the world’s richest in biodiversity, of which at present only 8% remains. In 2000 the Atlantic Forest in Bahia was declared by Unesco a Reserve of the Biosphere. In the Janaina Reserve, an international volunteer project is organized in cooperation with a local sustainable development organization, managing the area and also working with some local farmers’ cooperatives in the fair trade net.

The project's participants will be working in various projects of conservation, while having the rare opportunity of living in a pristine forest and having great opportunities of wild life watching.
The main tasks will be: reforestation in some small but critical border areas of the forest, permaculture, anti-fire and anti-hunting watch. In August it will be possible to plant the tree saplings raised in the nursery where the seeds are put in January.
Participants will also be taught all the basic principles of handcrafted chocolate production: from harvesting to fermentation, drying, roasting of beans and finally handwork processing. Participants will also be able to learn some elements of tropical botany and forestry farming.
The project activities will be held from Monday to Friday. Saturday and Sunday participants will be staying in Itacaré.

Itacaré is a beautiful coastal village, the rainforest reach the beaches and there are magnificent waves. Till ten years ago it was only a little fishermen’s village from where cocoa was shipped all around the world. The area was named Costa do Cacao and its capital town Ilheus is the setting of many novels by Jorge Amado.

Language: The official language of the project is English. Portuguese is the only language spoken by local people. Some basic knowledge of Portuguese will be useful, although some representatives of the local host will always be there and they are able to speak some English, Italian and Spanish.
