THE EXCITING, DELICIOUS AND OH-SO DRINKABLE 2003 BRUNELLOS
Everyone knows that 2003 was a very warm vintage in Europe. But did you know that northern Bordeaux and northern Italy did the best of all the wine regions throughout Europe’s viticultural areas? Perhaps the two best groups of Italian wines were the 2003 Barbarescos and the 2003 Brunellos.
As Antonio Galloni, the highly respected reviewer of Italian wines for The Wine Advocate, noted: “In general, 2003 is most successful in higher-altitude appellations where Sangiovese, the main indigenous varietal in Tuscany, has traditionally struggled to ripen under normal whether conditions... but the heat of 2003 has helped fill them out with an attractive plumpness of fruit. The naturally higher acidity of Sangiovese has also helped in preserving at least some freshness in the wines.” The demanding James Suckling of The Wine Spectator may have said it best when he wrote: “The more I taste the 2003’s, the more I like them.”
