Hi there. I am a 37 year old grad student, about to graduate with a MS in Education and a MS in Counseling, looking to provide my services to busy families who can use an extra pair of themselves. I have been a nanny for almost 17 years and have a strong sense of what it takes to maintain a family and equilibrium.

My services are focused on helping you maintain a functional home, which includes grocery shopping, keeping toiletries & cleaning products available, planning birthday parties, shopping for shoes-sports equipment, etc, helping with research for better airline fares, hotels etc, all of your mail services, making appointments for doctors, dentist etc, giving you a weekly calendar update, etc, and last but not least, helping to keep your home organized. It is amazing how having someone do all these things can free up time for your family and reduce stress :)

What I am offering is not a fulltime service, but I can commit to twice a week or more per family. You may not need all of these services, but I am sure that a little help can change your life.

If interested, please feel free to email me any questions and I will respond as soon as I can.

Thanks

We are on tour now but will be back in NYC in mid August. The band is now acoustic driven but we will be playing out at times in full electric. The sound is country/pop/americana with a HEAVY emphasis on vocal harmonies. The Guitar/Vocalist MUST HAS GREAT VOCAL chops. We are also very conscious of our brand so please be presentable on stage without major backstage dramas or addictions. We are buttoned up and playing out a TON. You must be able to tour at various times. PLease email us with your myspace or web page. We will be checking emails from the road.

Guitar/Vocalist: Additional chops on banjo/mandolin/slide we be a bonus.

Bass: upright or electric.

We need someone who can start tomorrow (Sunday), has fitted screens on all their windows, and someone who is available to foster for at least the next 3 weeks. Please only reply if you live in Manhattan or very close to Manhattan (and easily accessible by subway).
By fostering this cat you will literally save his life...and you'll make a little money while you're at it!! We're a small rescue group and we work very hard to place each animal.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/

Obama in Afghanistan

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) landed today in Kabul, Afghanistan, after a stop in Kuwait to visit U.S. service members, kicking off a world tour that will dominate the presidential race for the coming week.

Here is the 3:24 a.m. announcement from Robert Gibbs, Senior Strategist for Communications and Message: "At approximately 3:15 AM Eastern/2:15 AM Central, I received a phone call telling me that Senator Obama had landed at the airport in Kabul, Afghanistan.

"Since leaving Washington on Thursday, Senator Obama had stopped and visited troops in Kuwait. What follows is a pool report by the Chicago Tribune’s John McCormick. "

===================================

Background:

This is a pool report for July 17 for flight from Chicago’s Midway Airport to Washington’s Reagan National Airport, followed by motorcade to Andrews Air Force Base. All times are local for the geography mentioned. Please note that the campaign said it would be holding this for distribution until it confirmed Sen. Obama was on the ground in Afghanistan.

Report:

The motorcade left Sen. Obama’s home in Chicago’s Kenwood neighborhood at 11:11 a.m. There was one Chicago Police Department patrol car, followed by two SUVs, a sedan and a press van. Riding in the press van were agent Jill, Sam, John McCormick of the Chicago Tribune and Glen Johnson of The Associated Press.

The motorcade headed north on Lake Shore Drive to I-55 (Stevenson Expressway) and toward MDW. The CPD blocked traffic for our turn onto the western perimeter of the airfield, where we arrived at 11:31 a.m.

Waiting on the tarmac was a Gulfstream III (G3) executive jet (tail number N366JA). We exited our respective vehicles at 11:34 a.m.

The crew was waiting outside for the senator’s arrival and a few photos with him near a wing. He was wearing tan slacks and a short black jacket. After fishing around in the back of one of the SUVs for his luggage (he seemed especially to be checking his suits inside a garment bag), he was on the bird by 11:36 a.m.

Also getting on the plane were eight Secret Service agents and the two reporters. The senator briefly greeted us as we walked past his seat in the forward section. Seated near him was senior spokeswoman Linda Douglass, the only staff member on the flight.

After everyone found a seat on the crowded plane, the pilot announced that the flying time would be between 80 and 85 minutes. All seemed eager for him to start the engines, since the plane had been sitting under a hot sun and the cabin temperature was likely somewhere in the 90s. Sweat had begun to roll down the faces of some of the agents.

“We’re just easing you into it,” Obama told his bodyguards, referring to the heat and the desert weather they would all be traveling to in the coming days.

THE REST OF THE POOL REPORT AFTER THE JUMP

Hoping to put a group together for restaurant week dinner. Thought it would be a good way to meet new people. Been living in Manhattan for a little over 3 years and would love to meet people my own age.

If you like dinning out, enjoy wine and it seems all your friends are married, have kids or just don't go out anymore, this might be perfect for you too. Have made reservations at Patroon, 7/30 at 8PM for 6 people (hey what can I say, I'm an optimist... can be changed if necessary)

Man, woman, or cool couple doesn't matter - All I ask is you be at least semi-normal, can hold up your end of a conversation, be over age 39 or so and live/work in Manhattan. As an introduction - I'm 44, outgoing, work in advertising / marketing, fairly well traveled, love to make people laugh. If it turns out to be a couples thing, my new girlfriend is 41 and a really great person.

Please send me a note, tell me about yourself and why you might like to come to dinner.

Cheers, Scott

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/

Maliki backs Obama timeline

This, along with Bush's shift to support a general time "horizon," seems to shift the Iraq debate a bit:

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki supports US presidential candidate Barack Obama's plan to withdraw US troops from Iraq within 16 months. When asked in and interview with SPIEGEL when he thinks US troops should leave Iraq, Maliki responded "as soon as possible, as far as we are concerned." He then continued: "US presidential candidate Barack Obama is right when he talks about 16 months."

He demurred when asked if he prefers Obama in general to McCain.

One element of this question I haven't seen explored: Maliki and other Iraqi leaders must be aware of their ability to affect the U.S. election, particularly this fall.

You have a room full of inventory that needs to be cleaned up, the rug lifted and replaced, and the walls painted. No customer needs to ever see this room, but it is getting very cluttered and dirty even for your taste.

Who do you hire to clean it up?

A lot of NYC businesses used to grab a CRACKHEAD who will do it for $10 or $20. But these days CRACKHEADS are few and far between, and you just can't trust them. So you hire an ILLEGAL. Illegals are generally honest, they are not high, they are just as cheap as CRACKHEADS and they will do any job for any amount of pay for the hell of it.

Every single small business on my street uses illegals in some form or fashion. Under-the-table pay, of course, but illegals do not mind. The economy of NYC depends on illegals at this time, many small businesses will not survive if they had to hire AMERICAN workers on the books. No way.

Trust me. Don't get so down on illegals if you know anyone who owns a business you will understand should you talk to them.

Obama keeps returning to Reagan

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0708/11875.html

Obama keeps returning to Reagan
By DAVID PAUL KUHN | 7/19/08 7:21 AM EST

It could have been a coincidence when Barack Obama gave a major policy speech last week at a building named after Ronald Reagan. But it comes from the same campaign that until yesterday had pushed to hold a major foreign policy address at the Brandenburg Gate, where Ronald Reagan in 1987 famously demanded of his Soviet counterpart, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

During his bid for the presidency, Obama has repeatedly praised the political gifts of Reagan, the modern president most revered by Republicans, and whose policies are still held in contempt by many leading liberals.

A year ago Obama compared Reagan favorably to President Bush in a primary debate while defending his pledge to meet directly with the leaders of hostile nations without preconditions. “Ronald Reagan called [Russia] an evil empire,” said Obama, but he also “spoke to the Soviet Union.”

In January, Obama came under fire from within his party after casting himself as an emotive heir to Reagan. “Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America,” Obama told a Nevada newspaper in January, noting that Reagan “tapped into what people were already feeling, which is we want clarity, we want optimism, we want a return to that sense of dynamism and entrepreneurship that had been missing.”

David Bonior, then the campaign manager for John Edwards, charged that Obama was “wrong, frightfully so, in using Ronald Reagan as an example of voters reaching for change. The breadth of change Ronald Reagan brought was crippling for millions of Americans.”

While Obama made clear that he did not say that he liked Ronald Reagan’s policies, this past week the Democratic candidate made his boldest claim yet to the sunny mantle of the Republican president nicknamed “the great communicator.” As part of his much-touted trip abroad, Obama had hoped to deliver his climatic foreign policy address at the Brandenburg Gate, according to several high-ranking officials associated with the campaign and familiar with the visit’s logistics.

The plan sparked several days of high-profile debate in Germany, where Obama is extremely popular but many feared the allowing him to use the venue would embroil Germany in America’s domestic politics.

After Chancellor Angela Merkel deemed the Democratic candidate’s request to use the presidential setting “a bit odd,” Obama foreign policy advisor Dennis McDonough yesterday appeared to shut the door on the venue, which he denied had been or was being considered, saying, “The one thing that Barack made clear to us very early is that he didn’t think it made sense at all for him to speak at the Brandenburg Gate which he thought would be, perhaps, too presumptuous.”

The claim, though, came after several days of widely circulated reports previously uncontested by the campaign and confirmed by Politico indicating the campaign had been planning to have Obama speak at the Gate.

Reagan’s presidential advisers have taken note of Obama’s apparent preference for the Gate over the Schöneberg Town Hall where President Kennedy famously declared to the 1.4 million assembled Germans, "Ich bin ein Berliner.”

Reagan’s chief speechwriter Tony Dolan, who drafted the 1983 “evil empire” speech, said of Obama’s attempt to speak at the Gate, “This is a French critic endorsing German opera. It’s that shocking. Believe me—the Senators Obama of his day were among Reagan’s harshest critics.”

Dolan, who termed Obama’s attempt to speak at Brandenburg “absolutely an affirmation” of the rhetoric the Democratic candidate criticizes Bush for employing, recalls French newspaper headlines calling Reagan “la cowboy.” Critics around the globe—and on both sides of the Iron Curtain—regularly dismissed the president as a gun-slinging buckaroo.

At his speech at the 1984 Democratic convention in Manhattan, Jesse Jackson cracked, “I would rather have Roosevelt in a wheelchair than Reagan on a horse.” Four years later, Democratic nominee Michael Dukakis said he hoped to work more with allies and change America’ role in the world, instead of “wandering around the world like a lonesome cowboy.”

“The idea that Ronald Reagan was a unifying figure, that the nation rallied around him, that politics were not divisive in that time, is wrong,” said Peter Robinson, who drafted the “tear town this wall” speech. “Ronald Reagan was denounced again and again and again from the beginning of his presidency through to the very end.”

“I myself, in my campaign for president, mentioned that I thought Reagan deserved credit for pervading an optimistic feeling in America,” said Walter Mondale, the 1984 Democratic nominee.

“They’re looking for the best of the past, whether it’s John Kennedy or Ronald Reagan. These were very popular presidents,” added Geraldine Ferraro, Mondale’s running mate. “We thought his policies were disastrous. But people loved him.”

Mondale, who had not considered the symbolism of Obama’s attempt to speak at Brandenburg, recalls the concerns he felt at the time of Reagan’s address.

“I don’t think I would have said that [speech], not because I did not want the wall to fall down,” Mondale said. “But I would have been fearful that this direct confrontational rhetoric would strengthen hard liners in the Soviet Union and delay bringing the wall down.”

Looking back earlier this week on Obama’s previous praise of Reagan, Cuomo asked, rhetorically, “What did Reagan transform?”

He answered: “It wasn’t morning in America. If you are saying he transformed Americans toward a new hopefulness, hopefulness doesn’t buy peace, it doesn’t buy jobs.”

“What [Obama] is trying to do obviously is look big, look important, the way Reagan looked big,” Cuomo said. “Having 80,000 people in auditorium is probably a way to do that, it’s huge,” he added, referencing the arena scheduled for Obama’s convention speech. “And now the Brandenburg Gate.”

“Those men both went with something profound to say,” Robinson said of Reagan and Kennedy’s famous German speeches. “And so far Barack Obama is a politician who speaks nicely. If what you are seeking is a photo shoot where giants stood, he could look small.”

Perhaps, but it’s a tactic he learned from a previous candidate. During the 1980 campaign, Reagan was asked why he so often quoted Franklin Roosevelt and Kennedy.

“Show me a quotable recent Republican president,” Reagan replied. “J.F.K.’s a hero, and helpful if you’re going after the blue-collar votes—the same way Franklin Roosevelt is.”
I am a hard working, honest babysitter - looking for the same in a family. I totally understand that it is difficult for the good parents to employ someone who could offer nothing but the best to those entrusted in their care. Nonetheless, it is also difficult for the good babysitters to find a decent family. I am looking for long term, a family that I could stay with for quite some years.

ALL I NEED IS A DECENT FAMILY TO WORK WITH. :)

I will take good care of your child/children. I am very compassionate and loving, responsible, reliable, punctual, organize and creative. I love to read, play games, and do activities that will stimulate and encourage your child to learn. Other than interacting I also carry out various duties pertaining to the children. Usually, I am responsible for hosting and coordinating play dates, tutoring, tiding up, light cooking, outings to museums, libraries and parks and in general making sure that your little ones are safe.

Obama makes secret stop in Kuwait, plans on meeting 15 top leaders on world trip

By: MIKE ALLEN on July 19, 2008 @ 7:57 AM

Good Saturday morning. Super-bearish layout takes up ONE-THIRD of the New York Times front page – “A Slowdown With Trouble at Every Turn,” with grim graphs on housing, jobs and consumer spending. Inside: “How Bad Could Things Get?”

Robert Gibbs, the Obama campaign’s Senior Strategist for Communications and Message, announced the launch of the senator’s world tour with an e-mail to reporters at 3:24 a.m. Eastern on Saturday:

“At approximately 3:15 AM Eastern/2:15 AM Central, I received a phone call telling me that Senator Obama had landed at the airport in Kabul, Afghanistan. Since leaving Washington on Thursday, Senator Obama had stopped and visited troops in Kuwait.”

That was followed by a 1,000-word pool report by the Chicago Tribune’s John McCormick that covered Obama’s movement to Andrews Air Force Base.

AP, 7:26 a.m.: "A U.S. military spokesman says that ... Obama is visiting troops in eastern Afghanistan. Staff. Sgt. David Hopkins says Obama and two other senators are making a brief stop in Jalalabad airfield, in eastern Nangarhar province. Hopkins says that Obama is meeting with soldiers."

NBC News’ Andrea MITCHELL was on “Today” from Baghdad, awaiting his arrival.

ABC News Senior Foreign Correspondent Jim SCIUTTO, live from Kabul on “Good Morning America”: “Senator Obama told reporters on his plane that he plans to meet with U.S. military commanders and to thank the troops, quote, for their heroic work. He also plans to meet with the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai. From here, six more countries in little more than a week.”

The White House had a going-away present -- L.A. Times A1, ““Bush agrees to 'time horizon' for Iraq withdrawal: In a video call with Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki, he says troop withdrawals still would be tied to security conditions. The shift is seen as an effort to break a deadlock in talks on security pact,” By Julian E. Barnes and Paul Richter:

“President Bush has agreed to a ‘general time horizon’ for withdrawals of U.S. combat troops from Iraq, the White House announced Friday in a marked softening of his long-standing opposition to deadlines for reducing the American presence.

“Administration officials … emphasized that withdrawals still would be tied to improvements in security conditions. But military officials acknowledged that by setting targets for troop reductions, the new agreement was a step toward a timeline.”

(The White House says the timing was a coincidence.)

BABYSITTER Summer into Fall (East Village)

Hi,

I am a college student majoring in Graphic Design, my online portfolio. I love art, babysitting and bicycling.

I am looking for a summer job that will probably lead into the upcoming school year. I would prefer long term however, I am quite flexible. You should know that I already work as a spot sitter for a family [6 years old twins] in Tribeca on Mondays. The kids are off to camp and I will resume work once school reopen. I do not wish to leave because I really love working with them. They are a very down to earth and humble family. I love their children and would do anything in my power to make them have a good time. Together we read, draw, color/paint, cook [smoothies, ice cream and cookies], go to the park and have water fights. Seriously I think this is the best babysitting job I have ever obtain out of Manhattan. Really lovely kids.

I hope this is not a turn off, but I was just pointing out my qualities I guess, or something like that. I would love to find another household like this. I know everyone is different however, hopefully New York City could grant me another lovely family. I will not work for someone stuck up and who think they're posh. I will only work for a family that is respectful and genuine [please note that you cannot fake it - I am very sensitive to human behavior]. All I want is just a good family to work with.

You can call my employer and ask her about me, she even got me an internship at her job for the summer. I designed her business cards too, she didn't ask me, I offered my service; I think its great exposure besides, it makes a lovely addition to my portfolio.

I am available all summer long and if our schedule coincide, leak through into Fall

Iraqis Differ on Obama's Plans
As Candidate's Visit Nears, Residents Divided on Troop Pullout

By Sudarsan Raghavan
Washington Post Foreign Service
Saturday, July 19, 2008; Page A07

BAGHDAD, July 18 -- As Sen. Barack Obama prepares for his second visit to Iraq, Iraqis are divided over his plan to withdraw U.S. combat troops in 16 months should he be elected president.

"Iraq will be in hell, and we will find ourselves at the gates of civil war," said Maied Rashed al-Nuaemi, a provincial council member in Mosul, a city in northern Iraq where Iraqi forces are battling the Sunni insurgent group al-Qaeda in Iraq. "The American presence in Iraq is the safety valve to keep this country quiet. If they withdraw, that will lead to calamity."

But Mosul's deputy governor said he feels otherwise. "The U.S. presence in Iraq is useful now, but if the security situation gets better, I think it's not necessary to keep all these big numbers of soldiers here," Khasru Koraan said.
ad_icon

Perhaps more than any country in the world besides the United States, Iraq finds that its future is at stake in the presidential elections this November. And the single most important question Iraqis have for the next president is: How long will U.S. forces remain?

While most Iraqis are against what they see as the continuing U.S. occupation, many also view the U.S. military as a bulwark against Shiite militias and Sunni extremists, as well as the growing regional influence of Iran. In polls, a majority of Iraqis say they want U.S. forces to leave, but only a minority say they want the forces to leave immediately.

Some of the more than two dozen Iraqis interviewed for this article said Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, is naive in wanting to withdraw U.S. combat troops by the summer of 2010. Others viewed his position as a political calculation to win votes from a populace tired of war.

"I think that Obama talks more than what he can accomplish, because reality differs from promises and dreams," said Um Mohammed, 60, an engineer in Baghdad who declined to give her full name. "I think it is just a camouflage to reach the presidential chair. It's a way to satisfy the American people and the American mothers."

Mohammed Sulaiman, 56, a retired government employee in Baghdad, said: "The proposal of Obama to pull out the troops by summer 2010 is foolish. If the United States withdraws from Iraq, I think its credibility among the international countries would collapse."

Most Iraqis interviewed appeared wary of setting a specific timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops, although Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and senior politicians have said they want such a commitment from the Bush administration.

"We need more training, as well as new and developed weapons and supplies. We also need modern and developed technology. The U.S. forces should withdraw gradually so our Iraqi forces can fill the gaps that the American forces will leave," said Brig. Gen. Najim Abdullah, spokesman for the Iraqi National Police. "As to a timetable, I don't think we should specify it now, because it is related to the logistical support and the ability of our Iraqi forces to handle their responsibility."

Several Iraqi army commanders said the country's security forces would not be ready to stand on their own for at least several years.

"Now we are only fighting the insurgency in our country, and we still need the support" of U.S.-led coalition forces, said Maj. Gen. Habeeb al-Husaini, commander of the Iraqi army's 14th Division, whose forces control the cities of Amarah, Samawah and Nasiriyah in southern Iraq. "So how about if we want to defend the country from the external threats?"

Producer looking for Courageous Songwriter to record / produce (Midtown East)

I love producing / recording artists with integrity who are bold and courageous in their lyrics and can write them to memorable melodies. Artists like Lucinda Williams, Dylan, Ray Lamontagne, Brandi Carlile, Wilco etc.. Doesn't have to be singer / songwriter or americana, can be jazz, pop or whatever, as long as you're passionate. If you're looking for someone who will put as much blood and sweat into the recording / production of your songs, as you put into writing and performing them, give me a buzz. You will get a "major label" quality sound. My clients have told me that they are more happy with my recordings and production than other "top" studios that charge triple or more. Your record will be warm, punchy and loud but not overly compressed to death. I can give you plenty of references and a link to my studios website. I am on the Queens / Nassau border RIGHT by the LIRR about 30 min. from Manhattan.

I've got pro tools, vintage and modern Neumann tube mics, SSL, UAudio and Avalon preamps, Neve compression, great plug-ins etc.. But that means nothing if an engineer doesn't have good ears or is inexperienced. I can fully produce and arrange your songs or work with you to co-produce or just record you.

Please contact me this sounds good to you! Thanks!
