Now's the Time to Host a High School Exchange Student!

Sharing daily life with a teenager from another country and culture is a rich and rewarding experience, and it's a wonderful way to bring more understanding into the world. If you've ever thought about welcoming an exchange student into your home and family, now's the time to learn more. AFS, the leading international high school student exchange program, needs families in our community to host high school students for an academic year or six months. Students arrive in August.

AFS students come from more than 40 countries and represent many different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. OPTIONAL: Our community has the special opportunity to also host students from the Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES), which was initiated by the U.S. Department of State to build bridges of understanding between Americans and people in countries with significant Muslim populations. These students compete for highly competitive scholarships and once selected go through a long training and orientation.

All kinds of families can host--two-parent households with young children or teenagers, single-parent families, families with adopted children, foster parents, as well as couples and single people who do not have children or who have grown children. One of the most important characteristics of a host family is being eager and excited to share your life and activities while providing the same kind of care, support, and comfort as you would to your own child or family members.

Local AFS Volunteers enroll students in high school and support students and their families to help both gain the most from their experience. In addition to host families, AFS needs people who are interested in becoming volunteer liaisons to work locally with families and their hosted students. Anyone interested in learning more about hosting or volunteering with AFS should visit www.afsusa.org or contact Jennifer Anderson at janderson@afs.org or 1-800-876-2377 ext 131.

AFS Intercultural Programs/USA is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization. The mission of AFS is to work toward a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership.

Students like these will be arriving in our community:

Alejandro from Colombia
Alejandro is very studious. He is currently studying crude oils engineering at the National University in Medellin City. He attended the most prestigious high school in Colombia. Alejandro says that he is calm, although can be out going when necessary. He loves going to the gym and working out, he enjoys playing some sports with his friends. Alejandro is a hands-on person and enjoys setting tasks that are challenging but can be completed well.

Klaus from Denmark
Klaus enjoys computer role-playing and meets at a live RP club weekly. His other major interest is Magic trading cards. He leads his friends in these activities. "Besides this there are books, books, and more books." Klaus is improving his drawing.
Klaus' keen sense of humor comes out in his application. He is quiet, happy, and intelligent. His mother describes a trusting, caring, and sensitive
young man. Klaus likes to be intellectually challenged.
Klaus wants to travel, to "see other places than little Denmark." He hopes his exchange year provides a "deeper understanding of US culture and politics."

Arina from Thailand
Arina, nicknamed Rina, is the oldest of four siblings, including two brothers and a sister. She enjoys spending free time with her family and friends. Rina's mother is the greatest influence in her life and she respects and loves her very much.
Both her mother and her teacher say that Rina is very adaptable. She's also described as diligent, enthusiastic and responsible. In addition to English, she's also studying Malay.
She's looking forward to making friends and gaining another family she can keep in touch with throughout rest of her life. Rina asks that she not live with dogs because of her religious beliefs. Also, due to her religion she does not eat pork.

Looking for writers for the Senite City Film Project

Writers join the fun! Help us write this thing we’re calling the living script. This is not a script about how to live but rather a script that organically grows off multiple writers.
Prerequisites: writers must know how you use Blogger, sign a contract that allows us to use segments of the writing, must join the secret writing prompt forum and be willing to write somewhat regularly for a long period of time. This is not a paid position however anyone who helps out will get writing credits and offered a chance to help out with the film shoot in 2 years from now. Openings are available for about 20 writers or more with different writing styles and cultural back grounds who can write from their characters point of view. Writers will be required stay in character convincingly and realistically at all times on their blogs. Writers who are up for the challenge will be invited to a secret assignment forum that is members only and receive further instruction there. This not a game or a RPG or anything you get points for. You simply write you characters life as a blog and interact with other characters from the story.

If you are interested please e-mail: Filmmaker55@yahoo.com
Send
Name, Adress, phone #, email address you check regularly, a description of the type of character you would like to write about and a sample writing (very short please)

Here’s our Log Line:

A group of student film makers set out to make a class video journal about their year at high school and discover the children of Senite City disappearing

Senite City children are disappearing in the hollows of dank urban underground.
This strange occurrence is overlooked by parents, teachers, and police. No one seems to care except for a group of film students from UASF (Urban Action Student Films). These student film makers unravel a web of corrupt politics, ancient tribal magic and occult mystery all caught on guerrilla style film.

See asetproductions.com for a little background.

A little background on Guerilla film in case you wanted to research the subject
As written on wikipedia “
Guerrilla filmmaking refers to a form of independent filmmaking characterized by low budgets, skeleton crews, and simple props using whatever is available. Often scenes are shot quickly in real locations without any warning, and without obtaining permission from the owners of the locations.
Guerrilla filmmaking is usually done by independent filmmakers because they don't have the budget to get permits, rent out locations, or build expansive sets. Also studios tend not to use guerrilla filmmaking tactics because they could be sued, fined, or get their reputation hurt…”
A Market Research Focus Group is a form of qualitative research in which a group of people are asked about their attitudes, ideas and beliefs towards varying topics i.e. a product, service, concept, advertisement, idea, packaging or current event. Questions are asked in a relaxed interactive group in our office. Participants are free to talk with other group members.

At the conclusion of the session you are given a cash gift for your time. The average group usually pays $75.-$150. per 1-2 hour session; however some can go up to $200. or more.
