Thanks for your post. I read every bit of it. I would like to say I am cautiously ecstatic!

On your question about Troopergate and the attention it is getting. I, also, am surprised it isn't getting more negative attention here. It is in the news, but the McCain campaign totally played it down and are focusing on the parts of the report that showed she didn't actually do anything "illegal." Apparently, they don't much care that she was proven to have abused her power and found guilty of violating the trust of her governing state.

Do people care? That's what I would like to know. How many out there think that Sarah Palin should be getting more negative reaction for what she has done?

First of all Obama opposed the Fannie Mae regulation. It was McCain who 3 years ago saw a problem, but the democrats were getting too much money (especially Obama) so they allowed the economy to be destroyed. Second of all you must be special because I don't think anybody heard Jesus endorse Obama for anything, especially president. Third of all you are the perfect example of the kind of brainwashed and ignorant person who supports Obama. Anytime Obama is critisized on legitimate issues, he plays the race card, and avoids any answer. He is a crook, and a scumbag with his ACORN, and shady funding, and he is the one selling America to the muslims by taking their money. They are his biggest supporters. Did you know that your idol said he wanted to wait until January to start working on the economic problems, after he becomes president. I guess that shows how much he cares (about his own self) and not the country. Do some research and educate yourself. Oh and do us all a favor, learn how to spell and stop butchering the English language, moron.

i am currently looking for women who want to voice their opinions about sarah palin. i am putting together a project on palin-- using her campaigning as a case-study to address questions of identity politics, feminism, and women in the political arena. i am looking for both righties and lefties and anything beyond or in between. i would be particularly happy to hear from women who are in support of palin. the form it would take: short interviews documented via video. the purpose of this project is to open up discussion on her in a productive manner, in particular before the election. i am happy and willing to travel anywhere in the new york area. please contact me if you are interested or have any questions.

There was one statement of his, twice repeated, that made me ponder. That
was the one about all our spending in Afghanistan amounting to only three
weeks expenditure in Iraq. It's unbelievable on the face of it, no matter how
much faith he has in it. And also, how are people figuring out what we're
really spending in either of those places? I believe they're counting in the
normal cost of maintaining an army, period, without regard to where it's
stationed or what it's doing. In other words the army is going to cost us money
whether it's over here in Fort Dix or overseas in Fallujah or some such place.
That has to be considered a fixed cost and shouldn't be charged to the war.
Are the war opponents resorting to Enron accounting?

We are continuing on our trips to NE Philly to talk to voters about Barack Obama and Joe Biden. To sign up for these trips you must sign up at http://wrolf.net

If you haven't signed up at http://wrolf.net, you are not signed up for this trip, so please be sure to sign up there.

Everyone is welcome to come and help us convince voters that Obama and Biden are the right choice. NE Philly is critical to this campaign. It is an area that went strong for Hillary, and many voters there have not yet come over to Obama/Biden. The Republicans think the area is winnable for them, and it just may be the place where PA is won or lost.

We will leave from NYC at 8am sharp. We'll get an orientation in Philly at 10am, and knock on doors until 5pm. We will be back to NYC by 8:30pm. Transportation will be a combo of private cars, rental vans, a bus, and train. Round trip costs should be $20-$30.

Looking forward to working with you

McCain's Hero Petraeus: "I Do Think You Have To Talk To Enemies"

By Greg Sargent - October 9, 2008, 2:18PM

So General Petraeus agrees with Barack Obama -- and not John McCain -- on the question of whether we should meet with hostile enemies?

In an interview that aired on CBS last night, John McCain, when asked which three living people he'd like to have dinner with most, promptly chose General Petraeus. McCain frequently hails Petraeus as an "American hero."

McCain, however, might not enjoy that dinner so much if he heard Petraeus' views on one of the leading foreign policy differences he has with Barack Obama.

In a case of comically awful timing, Petraeus yesterday gave a talk at the Heritage Foundation in which he more or less echoed Barack Obama's views on negotiating with hostile foreign leaders -- views that McCain has repeatedly subjected to criticism and ridicule.

Asked by a questioner specifically about the disagreement on this topic that McCain and Obama had at Tuesday night's debate, Petraeus demurred a bit, but said: "I do think you have to talk to enemies."

"I'm not trying to get into the middle of domestic politics," Petraeus also said, "but I mean what we did do in Iraq ultimately was sit down with some of those that were shooting at us. What we tried to do was identify those who might be reconcilable."

Petraeus' comments were reported on yesterday by Spencer Ackerman and were noted elsewhere today, and we think they deserve more attention. We went to the video on Heritage's site to get a longer transcript, and sure enough, the context shows that Petraeus was more or less backing up Obama's point of view.

What Petraeus said isn't a perfect endorsement of Obama's views -- he didn't specifically discuss Iran, and the question of "no preconditions" didn't come up -- but it's pretty darn close.

That's because it's as clear as day that the context specifically was the debate between Obama and McCain on this topic on Tuesday night . During that exchange, the candidates clashed on whether to meet with the leaders of Iran, and the questioner at Heritage posed the subject about talking to enemies specifically in that light.

And while Petraeus did say he didn't see Tuesday's debate, the general no doubt knows precisely what the disagreement between the two men is on this topic. So the question Petraeus was asked was basically the same as him being asked whose views he endorsed when it comes to the two men's very public disagreement. Petraeus' own joke about not wanting to wade into "a minefield" and his allusion to not getting "involved in domestic politics" would suggest that that's how he saw the question, too.

And Petraeus more or less picked the Obama argument.

Maybe Petraeus and McCain can discuss this at dinner someday.

Founder Of Group Palin Courted Professed "Hatred For The American Government"; Cursed "Damn Flag"

The founder of the Alaska Independence Party -- a group that has been courted over the years by Sarah Palin, and one her husband was a member of for roughly seven years -- once professed his "hatred for the American government" and cursed the American flag as a "damn flag."

The AIP founder, Joe Vogler, made the comments in 1991, in an interview that's now housed at the Oral History Program in the Rasmuson Library at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.

"The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government," Vogler said in the interview, in which he talked extensively about his desire for Alaskan secession, the key goal of the AIP.

"And I won't be buried under their damn flag," Vogler continued in the interview, which also touched on his disappointment with the American judicial system. "I'll be buried in Dawson. And when Alaska is an independent nation they can bring my bones home."

At another point, Volger advocated renouncing allegiance to the United States. In the course of denouncing Federal regulation over land, he said:

"And then you get mad. And you say, the hell with them. And you renounce allegiance, and you pledge your efforts, your effects, your honor, your life to Alaska."

You can listen to audio of the relevant section of the Volger interview here . Bill Schneider, curator of oral history at the library, verified the authenticity of the interview and the quote to me a few moments ago.

Palin has courted the group over the years.

Three years after the controversial interview, in 1994, Palin attended the group's annual convention, according to witnesses who spoke to ABC News' Jake Tapper. The McCain campaign is disputing her presence there, but Tapper found two people to attest to it.

The McCain campaign today produced Palin's voting registration records, and said they proved she was never a member of the party.

But she has repeatedly reached out to the group. The McCain campaign has confirmed she visited the group's 2000 convention, and she addressed its convention this year, as an incumbent governor whose oath of office includes upholding the Constitution of the United States.

Palin's husband, Todd Palin, was a member of the party from 1995-2002 with a brief exception in 2000.

It's worth noting that Vogler isn't just some figure from ancient history. He is still being hailed on AIP's site this year, the same year Palin addressed the group's convention.

It's worth pondering how big a deal it would be if Obama had ever courted the support of a group whose head had said this kind of thing about America and her flag. .

...Hitler Speech from 1939. His campaign merely substituted American words when Germanic or Germany was said, do they think we're stupid:

"The misery of our people is horrible to behold! Millions of the middle class have been impoverished. When this collapse finally reaches the whole of the American (Germanic) people, we will be faced with an immeasurable disaster.

All about us the warning signs of this collapse are apparent. Deregulation with its method of madness is making a powerful and insidious attack upon our dismayed and shattered nation. It seeks to poison and disrupt in order to hurl us into an epoch of chaos…. This negative, destroying spirit spared nothing of all that is highest and most valuable. Beginning with the family, it has undermined the very foundations of morality and faith and scoffs at culture and business, nation and Country, justice and honor.

My campaign feels responsible for the restoration of orderly life in the nation and for the final elimination of class madness and class struggle. We recognize no classes, we see only the American people, millions of hard working, middle class workers who will either overcome together the difficulties of these times or be overcome by them. We are firmly resolved and we have taken our oath. Since the present Washington DC establishment (was Berlin) is incapable of lending support to this work, we have abandoned the American (German) people whom we represent to perform the task themselves.

The American (German) People have called upon us to bring about the revival our Nation with change as our tool. Therefore we now appeal to the American (German) people to support this reconciliation. We wish to make the government work and it will work. We did not ruin the American (Germanic) nation for the past eight (was 18) years, but now we will lead the nation back to health. We are determined to make well in four years the ills of the past eight years. But the National Government cannot make the work of rebuilding jobs and our economy dependent upon the approval of those who wrought destruction. The Republican (Old)party and their lackeys have had eight years to show what they can do, even more if you count how long they’ve been in congress. The result is a heap of ruins.

Now, people of America (Germany), give us four years and then pass judgment upon us. May God Almighty give our work His blessing, strengthen our purpose, and endow us with wisdom and the trust of our people, for we are fighting not for ourselves but for America (Germany).
Palin's husband, Todd Palin, was a member of the party from 1995-2002 with a brief exception in 2000.
It's worth noting that Vogler isn't just some figure from ancient history. He is still being hailed on AIP's site this year, the same year Palin addressed the group's convention.
It's worth pondering how big a deal it would be if Obama had ever courted the support of a group whose head had said this kind of thing about America

(after the debate town hall with Mc Cain).

I thought the differences between John McCain and me were pretty clear tonight

I will fight for the middle class every day, and -- once again -- Senator McCain didn't mention the middle class a single time during the debate.

If you agree that we need to cut taxes for 95% of working families, reduce health care costs, and end the war in Iraq responsibly, then I need your help right now.

And if you heard John McCain push more of the same discredited policies, including tax cuts for the wealthy and giant corporations, tax increases on health care, and continuing to spend $10 billion a month in Iraq, then now is the time to act.

Four weeks from tonight, we'll know which of us will be the next president.

John McCain does not have the ability to fix this economic crisis. After declaring the fundamentals of the economy strong, he created a political circus in Washington last week by mucking up bailout negotiations; a deplorable stunt, considering he and his political cronies helped cause the current meltdown.

It was McCain and his economic adviser Phil Gramm who pushed for the deregulation that helped lead to the banking crisis, and it was McCain's crony Rick Davis who had deep lobbyist ties to Freddie Mac. Don't let others be fooled by McCain's economic grandstanding because the reality is his policies and principles will only exacerbate our financial hardships. That's why you must spread this video.

McCain is being deceitful with his sudden populist message and support for regulation; his economic policies still favor our nation's wealthy elite. Call out McCain's economic dishonesty. Send this video to friends and ask them to sign up for a free Brave New Films video subscription to know the latest on TheRealMcCain.com. Then, post it on your blogs and spread it on networking sites like Digg and Reddit. These are some of the best ways to reach people who are not following this debate closely.
Let's make sure everyone knows McCain can't get us out of the mess he got us into in the first place.

In a national poll by CNN/Opinion Research Corporation, Obama leads McCain 53 percent to 45 percent among likely voters. The 8-point lead is twice what it was in the last CNN/Opinion Research Corporation, taken in mid-September.
A Fox News/Ramusssen Reports poll of five battleground states finds little good news for McCain. Obama has widened his lead in Colorado, Florida and Missouri, and little has changed in two other key states, Ohio and Virginia, where Obama has the edge.
A new Washington Post-ABC News poll, however, shows that Obama now has the advantage in Ohio because more voters believe he would be a better steward of the economy. McCain still has the edge on leading the U.S. fight against terrorism and the Iraq war, but fewer voters identify those as top issues.
Other polls of battleground states, these by CNN/Time magazine/Opinion Research Corp., underscore the challenge for McCain in Indiana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin. The only one of those states where McCain enjoys a lead is Indiana, where 51 percent of likely voters say they back him compared to 46 percent for Obama. But that's a slim margin, especially when you consider that Bush carried the state by 21 percentage points four years ago.
Finally, a CBS News poll shows the Democratic ticket leading the Republican ticket 47 to 43 percent among registered voters.
Against this backdrop, the two candidates face off tonight at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., for their second presidential debate. What's your take on the race and who do you want to see win the White House?

Historical Republican Accomplishments
Many interesting facts about Republican contributions to our Country. Today, students are taught that Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was an eccentric individual act, and that Lincoln rose above politics in issuing it. In fact, the opposite was true. This was a profoundly political act, which had been expressly authorized by the U.S. Congress in a hotly debated law. Both the House and the Senate had solidly Republican majorities, which -- over strong Democratic opposition ' had passed the Confiscation Act. That law stated very clearly that slaves belonging to rebels were free. By signing the Emancipation Proclamation, President Lincoln was implementing that statute. Freeing the slaves was thus a political question that every Republican in Congress voted for, and every Democrat voted against. At the end of the war, despite their strong majorities, Republicans in Congress knew they wouldn’t have a majority forever. Anticipating that the Democrats might someday come back into power, Republicans unanimously voted for what became the 13th Amendment to the Constitution -- thereby putting an end to slavery. The Republicans in Congress went on to pass the nation’s first ever Civil Rights Act, extending citizenship and equal rights to people of all races, all colors, and all creeds. Notice that Republicans didn’t take the political approach that they might have, limiting themselves to saying that former slaves would now be treated equally, or only blacks or African-Americans would gain their civil rights. We said all people, all colors, all creeds -- because that’s the way Republicans think. The founders of the Republican Party were simply putting in force the stated ideals of the Founding Fathers, so that our government would finally recognize that all people are created equal, and that all should enjoy the right to pursue happiness. Republicans have always believed that every man and woman is created equal. This is not a choice that can be made for us by others. It isn’t up to our government. So we required our government to fulfill that promise. The same year as the first Civil Rights Act, Republicans in Congress wrote another constitutional amendment to extend even further the scope of our civil rights legislation. We extended the concepts of due process of law, and equal protection of the laws, to every state. Now, every state -- even those where Democrats held sway -- would have to implement these principles. No longer just at the federal level, but at the state level as well, the civil rights of every American individual would be protected. This major civil rights advance -- what we now know as the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution -- is a purely Republican achievement, because every single Democrat in Congress voted against the 14th Amendment. That is another fact deftly omitted from American history textbooks these days: we owe our Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection of the laws and due process to Republicans, and this bedrock of American civil rights was unanimously opposed by the Democrats. Three years later, in 1869, the Republicans proposed yet another constitutional amendment, this one specifically guaranteeing blacks the right to vote. The same partisanship was in evidence: 98% of Republicans voted for it; 97% of the Democrats voted against it. Seven years later, Republicans in Congress authored what was then, and what remains today, the most sweeping Civil Rights legislation ever enacted. The 1875 Civil Rights Act guaranteed the right of equal access to all citizens in all public accommodations -- whether or not owned or controlled by the government. Now that phrase, “public accommodations,” is very familiar to us today, because it was at the heart of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which became the focal point of the 1960s civil rights movement. The reason that this question was before the Congress again in the 1960s is that the 1875 Civil Rights Act only lasted for eight years before the Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional. What finally became law in 1964, therefore, was the original Republican legislation of 90 years earlier. Not surprisingly, in 1964 a significantly higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats voted for the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The Democrats’ opposition to Republican efforts to protect the civil rights of African-Americans lasted not just through the Reconstruction era, but well into the 20th Century. In the South, the terrorist wing of the Democratic Party, the Ku Klux Klan, virtually destroyed the Republican Party -- which did not recover enough to become a force in the region until President Reagan’s message of freedom and equality for all prevailed in the 1980s. Every single African-American in Congress, House and Senate, until 1935 was a Republican. In 1872, the first black governor took office in Louisiana. I love his name: Pinckney Pinchback, a great Republican. Our own state of California was the first to have a Hispanic governor. Can you guess his political party? Republican Romualdo Pacheco became governor in 1875, long before anybody had ever heard of Cruz Bustamante. The first Hispanic U.S. Senator was elected from New Mexico in 1928. You guessed it -- he was a Republican, Octaviano Larrazolo. Republicans led the fight for women’s voting rights -- and the Democrats, as a party, opposed civil rights for women. All of the leading suffragists -- including Susan B. Anthony, Lucretia Mott, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton -- were Republicans. In fact, Susan B. Anthony bragged, after leaving the voting booth, that she had voted for “the Republican ticket -- straight.” The suffragists included two African-American Republican women who were also co-founders of the NAACP: Ida Wells and Mary Terrell, great leaders of our party, both of them. The first women delegates to a national party convention did not go to the Democratic National Convention, they went to the Republican Convention. In fact, for years Democrats kept women out, while Republicans were letting women in. The goal of the Republican suffragists, including their male Republican elected official friends, was to add an amendment to the Constitution that would give women the right to vote. Sadly, there is not a single California schoolbook in use today that tells students it was a Republican U.S. Senator from California, Aaron Sargent, who authored the women’s suffrage amendment -- or that he named it in honor of another great Republican, Susan B. Anthony. Senator Sargent introduced the Susan B. Anthony Amendment in 1878, but it didn’t become the law of the land until 1920. Why? Because Republicans did not have majorities in both the House and the Senate at the same time, and the Democrats kept voting against it. But, in the meanwhile, in 1916, Montana -- which had by state law given women the right to vote -- elected Jeannette Rankin to be the first woman to serve in the United States Congress. She, of course, was a Republican. In the national election two years later, in 1918, Republicans won majorities in both the House and the Senate. We then swiftly passed the Women’s Suffrage Amendment. And 1920, therefore, was the first presidential election in which all women could vote. What do you think most women in America did? They voted for Warren Harding. In fact, I remember having a conversation with my grandmother about this. I talked to her about the first time she was able to vote, and I asked her, “Who did you vote for?” She looked at me as if I were crazy. “Of course,” she answered, “I voted for the Republicans. They gave us the vote.” That’s why the Republican landslide for Harding was so big that year. Meanwhile, in the face of the Democrats’ continued terrorizing of Republican organizational activity in the South, many courageous Republicans were standing up nonetheless. One of the great Southern leaders of that era who was openly calling himself a Republican and drawing attention to his cause was Booker T. Washington, the famed educator and founder of Alabama’s Tuskegee Institute. But even a man as distinguished as this, and even in the 20th century, was opposed by a still-racist Democratic Party. When Republican President Teddy Roosevelt had the temerity to invite Booker T. Washington to dine with him in the White House, the Democrats raised holy hell through the media. They said it was a scandal, and outrageous, and an atrocity. Republicans led the integration of pro sports. Branch Rickey, owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, was a Republican businessman who hired his fellow Republican, Jackie Robinson. Together they integrated Major League Baseball when Jackie Robinson took the field in 1947 for his first game. In addition to being a great athlete, a great Dodger, and a great American, Jackie Robinson was a great Republican -- and a very outspoken one. This year, 2004, is the 50th anniversary of the modern civil rights movement, which most people date to the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision. That opinion was written by a Republican Chief Justice appointed by a Republican President, Dwight Eisenhower. And of course that Republican Chief Justice had been our three-term Republican Governor here in California, and he’d been our Republican nominee for Vice President of the United States in 1948: Earl Warren. Three years after Brown, President Eisenhower won passage of his landmark Civil Rights Act of 1957. Now remember, the nation had just ended a long stretch of Democratic administrations -- nearly four terms of FDR, and seven years of Truman -- and yet there had been no civil rights legislation at all. In fact, the Republican Civil Rights Act of 1957 was the first U.S. civil rights legislation in eight decades. Another great Republican, U.S. Senator Everett Dirksen of Illinois, authored and introduced the 1960 Civil Rights Act. It was also he who was most responsible -- more than any other individual -- for the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. As Republican Leader in the Senate, even though his party was in the minority, Dirksen crafted the strategy that overcame long odds and tenacious Democratic opposition. The Democrats weren’t just internally conflicted about the 1964 Civil Rights Act; a significant number of them actually filibustered it -- preventing an up or down vote on the bill. Eventually, however -- thanks to Dirksen’s leadership -- this landmark legislation did get the vote it deserved. As with all of the previous civil rights legislation in our nation’s history, it passed with significantly more support from Republicans than from Democrats. The same was true for the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which became law the following year. Which political party gave our nation the first Asian American Senator in the United States Senate? The Republican Party -- and it was the esteemed Hiram Fong of Hawaii. The first African American Senator after Reconstruction? Republican Ed Brooke from Massachusetts. The first Asian American federal judge? Republican Herbert Choy, appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals, by President Nixon, for whom I served as law clerk. The first woman on the Supreme Court? Everyone knows that. But you may not have known that before she became a U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Arizona Republican Sandra Day O’Connor was the first woman to be Majority Leader in the legislature of any state. The first Hispanic member of the President’s Cabinet? Republican Lauro Cavazos, Secretary of Education under President Reagan. It was President Ford who, in 1976, repealed FDR’s notorious executive order interning 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. We can be proud of Republican appointments such as Justice Clarence Thomas, the former Chairman of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; Colin Powell, the first African American to be National Security Advisor or Secretary of State; Condoleezza Rice, the first woman to serve as National Security Advisor; and Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, the first Asian American woman in any president’s Cabinet. This remarkable, unbroken 150-year string of civil rights achievements is the reason that, this year, we are so proud to publish the 2005 Republican Freedom Calendar. Our party has a great story to tell. There is also much work still to be done to secure the God-given rights of all men and women, and the Republican Party is leading the way. Ronald Reagan was fond of saying that the United States of America is the only country on Earth, now or at any time in history, that was founded not on race or nationality, but on an ideal. Republicans, from the founding of our party to this very day, have been carrying forward this ideal of individual freedom.

Anthony bragged, after leaving the voting booth, that she had voted for “the Republican ticket -- straight.”

The suffragists included two African-American Republican women who were also co-founders of the NAACP: Ida Wells and Mary Terrell, great leaders of our party, both of them.

Surge Of New Voters and Obama Campaign Efforts Tipping Virginia

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/diane-tucker/surge-of-new-voters-and-o_b_132115.html

Surge Of New Voters and Obama Campaign Efforts Tipping Virginia

McLEAN, Va. -- Virginia increased its voter rolls by a whopping 6.2 percent during the 2008 New Voter Registration period ending today, a figure that is more than double the Obama campaign goal. All these new voters could have a huge impact in a tossup state with fewer than 5 million registered voters. The official tally so far -- 307,482 new voters -- will be even higher once October registrations are counted.

Who are these new decision-makers? "Mostly they're young, independent, and tired of what's going on in Washington. Many moved to Virginia from other states. More than 60 percent are under age 35," Jared Leopold told OffTheBus. Leopold is communications director for the Democratic Party of Virginia Coordinated Campaign.

How many of these newbies are Democrats? There's no way of knowing because Virginia's registration is non-partisan, but the Obama campaign is encouraged by their demographics. One-third live in heavily Democratic northern Virginia: Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax County, Fairfax City, Falls Church City, Prince William, Manassas, Manassas Park, and Loudoun. More than 5,000 new voters registered in Richmond, and more than 3,500 in Norfolk and Newport News -- all areas where John Kerry had a majority in 2004.

At a GOP rally over the weekend, John McCain's brother Joe referred to northern Virginia as "communist country," and then quickly apologized. The Pentagon is located in Arlington.

McLean, a northern Virginia community with a median home price of $1.4 million, once was famously red on the political map. Conservative political commentator Pat Buchanan lives here. So does former GOP presidential candidate and television actor Fred Thompson. But McLean today is as purple as the leaves on the city's flowering crab trees. So on Saturday, OffTheBus drove to Lewinsville Park in the center of town to grill soccer moms and football dads on the issues while they were grillin' hot dogs as part of a youth football fundraiser.

Soccer Moms, Football Dads Want A New Team

"I don't think McLean is a Republican stronghold anymore, unless people are lying," Janis Thomas told OffTheBus. "I know I'm tired of the Republicans and want them out. It's definitely time for a change." Like Obama, Thomas has been against the Iraq War from Day One. "Spending $10 billion a month on that war is disgusting," said the soccer mom. Many of her friends are voting Democratic this time, having been "turned on to Barack Obama by their kids."

About 84 percent of the people living in this community are white. Will race will be a problem for the Obama-Biden ticket? "In this day and age, basing your vote on color is a tragedy," said Thomas.

"At the end of the day, another Republican administration would put America in such a dangerous position," added soccer mom Anne Marie Marenberg. "All this maverick talks scares me. I find it alarming. Do we really need another gun-toting maverick coming to town?"

At the other end of the park, pint-sized football players were playing their hearts out while their parents cheered them on from the sidelines. John (who preferred not to give his last name) told OffTheBus he's concerned about taxes: "The top one percent pay 39 percent of the taxes, and that's enough." John is an undecided voter who favors McCain but is afraid Sarah Palin doesn't have enough experience. "I wish she had some kind of world view. I prefer listening to Obama speak, but I'm afraid his tax plan will kill small businesses."

Football parents James and Heather Devlin are voting for Obama. So is Heather's sixty-year-old father, a southern gentleman who is "fed up with Bush" and the Republican Party. "The world perceives Americans as aggressors. I'd prefer they see us as tempered and thoughtful," said James Devlin. "I think the damage is reversible, and I look forward to it being reversed."

Devlin, an information-technology expert, is surprised how many of his Republican colleagues are "undecided" about this election. His wife Heather, an elementary school teacher, wants Virginia to be the tipping point for Obama in the election. "This is where it's going to happen -- right here in northern Virginia."

Could Virginia Be The Tipping Point?

The population growth in northern Virginia has been dramatic, but it takes more voters than you might think to substantially change the political balance of an entire state. Here's the reality check: in 2004 northern Virginia accounted for 32.4 percent of all registered voters in the state; today that same area accounts for 32.8 percent of the state's registered voters.

Here's another pivotal consideration. The southwestern corner of Virginia is a land of small farms and coal mines settled by Scots-Irish Calvinists. Obama was trounced here during the primaries. In May Gov. Tim Kaine (D) urged the candidate not to write off this region, because it could give John McCain the entire state. "Presence really matters," Kaine told Obama. "Go and show 'em you're really interested."

The Obama campaign opened eight field offices in southwestern Virginia, and engaged many of Hillary Clinton's former canvassers. It's probably no coincidence that the DNC keynote speaker was Virginia's popular former governor Mark Warner (D). So tempting is Virginia to Obama that the day after he secured Clinton's capitulation in the Democratic primary, he was in Bristol, Va. campaigning. The day after the first presidential debate, he was in Fredericksburg, Va. speaking at a huge rally.

In 2004, Virginia Sen. Jim Webb (D) told the Wall Street Journal that "the greatest realignment in modern politics would take place rather quickly if the right national leader found a way to bring the Scots-Irish and African-Americans to the same table, and so to redefine a formula that has consciously set them apart for the past two centuries."

Is Obama that kind of leader? "There's not a lot of difference between the situation of those people he was trying to help in Chicago and the people in southwest Virginia," Webb told New Yorker writer Peter J. Boyer.

Today the race in Virginia is tight because a significant number of people who voted for Bush in 2004 say they will vote for Obama in 2008. Should the race be close on Election Day, watch for all these new voters to tip the balance.
Oh yeah just keep your head in the sand and keep yelling BUSH! BUSH! BUSH! that will make these ugly realities go away. Bottom line here, BOTH PARTIES are culpable, the diference between the candidates is that the Rep. will hold poeple from both parties accountable. Obama is a hardcore, party line, blue dog democrat who has taken too much money from too many of those involved to seriously claim he will do anything. Barry has never and will never break lockstep with his party puppeteers, (FACT) I challenge anyone to find ONE example to the contrary. So just continue to hope that most Americans will stay ignorant of these facts until after the election. In the mean time I'd stay away from the ITS' THE ECONOMY STUPID! postings, cause the motto seems to be more properly applied to your messiah. Gotta love that CHANGE, eh?
people. And all will be well there again, poof, magically over night.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that people who can't tell us
if it will rain on Friday CAN tell us that the polar ice caps will melt
away in ten years if I don't start driving a Prius.

I'm voting Democrat because I'm not concerned about the slaughter
of millions of babies so long as we keep all death row inmates alive.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that business should not be
allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and
give the rest away to the government for redistribution as THEY see
fit. They just know better than you...or me.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe liberal judges need to
rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit some fringe kooks who
would NEVER get their agendas past the voters.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that open borders and government give-aways to foreigners is a great way to grow a nation. Open to one and all!!!

I'm voting Democrat because I love the fact that I can now marry whatever I want. I've decided to marry my horse.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits of 4%
on a gallon of gas are obscene but the government taxing the same
gallon of gas at 18% isn't.

-Obama has accepted campaign donations from known terrorist organizations, illegal, refuses to release his donation records
-Obama was mentored by Mansour at 25, for some time, a prominent Saudi anti-American strategist for the Saudi's, ill advised
-Obvious Ayers link, spent numerous weekends with him, on retreats, Obama's Senate campaign began in Ayers living room, he has donated to his campaign over and over again
-Obama currently employs a lawyer, to squash his not being born in the US (can't run for President then obviously)employs a lawyer given to him, free, from CAIR, a terrorist organization...
-Obama attended a church for 20 years, which openly incites it's members to join anti-American organizations who want the overthrow and demise of the US.

I'm in the Army.

You always want to question someone, be they soldier, sailor, Marine or airman if they say they are a hero because they were wounded, captured or shot-down.

You become a hero by killing bad guys or convincing bad guys not to be bad guys. Being wounded, killed or captured are things you try to avoid - they don't make you a hero.

Sometimes we miss the point of how McCain ended up in a Vietnamese prison camp -- HE WAS SHOT DOWN!

Having said that, I think Obama is an even bigger ass. Next time, let's recruit Christine Todd-Whitman to run.
