Heroes and Legends of the Secret Museum
The Art of Pat Conte

Join us for the opening reception of Heroes and Legends of the Secret Museum, The Art of Pat Conte.
Pat Conte, blues musician and curator of the radio program The Secret Museum, exhibits his depictions of favorite musicians, from Mississippi John Hurt, Uncle Dave Macon, Dock Boggs, and Son House to religious heroes St. Matthew and David and Goliath. Conte works in vellum and parchments, in vegetable colors and exotic inks, with fine woods and singing strings, in the well-grooved carving or well-loved shellac, and through sacred objects to their trusted custodian (never their owner) in this life. Following the reception, Pat will take the stage with Bob Guida, together forming the legendary blues band, the Otis Brothers.

Friday, April 18 at 9:00PM
The Otis Brothers and Special Guests

For over 30 years The Otis Brothers have brought blues and gospel of a by-gone era to the stage. Pat Conte and Bob Guida own tunes are juxtaposed with those learned firsthand from folks like Larry Johnson and R.L. Burnside, or transmuted by the spirits of those gone by, including Leadbelly, Blind Willie Johnson, Henry Truvillion, Son House, Gary Davis, Sonny Boy Nelson, Willie Mae Williams, Jimmy Strothers, Henry Sims, Henry Townshend, and Eddie Head & Family.

The Otis Brothers will be joined on the stage by friends and fellow lovers of old American blues.

Michael Daves

Michael Daves wows crowds across the city with his wailing voice and fabulous guitar playing. The Boston Herald writes: "Guitarist-singer Michael Daves, 29, is a wilder revelation. A Georgia boy relocated to Brooklyn, N.Y., he knows both bluegrass and rock. Daves owns a nasal, yipping voice that seems to have escaped from some crazed hillbilly past. With his hair flopping and his thick eyeglasses slipping, he looks like a mad uncle just let out of the attic. His guitar work was so intense and jolting, and his voice such a yelping cry from the heart, he seemed a punk-grass force of nature.”

The Freight Hoppers

When mountain fiddle saws its way into a rugged piece of old-time, it’s always better if the bow hand cuts deep. What a sight and sound it is to see a musician such as David Bass in full unstoppable flight. Meanwhile, tasty banjo man Frank Lee, whose left-of-centre style was another major asset that led to the Freight Hoppers’ legendary status, continued to entertain as only he can, and it seemed like we’d all just have to live with the memories and pray that some day, they might miraculously re-form.
Lee and Bass have brought in Thomas Bailey on guitar and vocals (a solid sidekick from The Forge Mountain Diggers) and Isaac Deal (another prized addition) on upright bass.
The Freight Hoppers recorded two critically-acclaimed albums that climbed into the Top 20 of Billboard’s Americana music charts. Back then, they were only warming up.

The Woes

The music of The Woes is a stew of Delta blues and early Country, of bluegrass and New Orleans marching band music, dished out by banjo, harmonica, accordion, French Horn and organ. At the center of their distinctive sound is frontman Osei Essed's inimitable voice and expert songwriting. The songs are alternately chant-like, rhythmically driving, lyrical, haunting; his voice is sweetly controlled or as frightening as (the early blues preacher) Blind Willie Johnson. Alongside Essed is his longtime musical collaborator, Cicero Jones, a French Horn player and gospel organist. The addition of Ronen Ben, an accordionist and blues harpist, completed the frontline, and also allowed Essed and Jones more drink tickets.
